    Default School Christmas Dance

Well, tomorrow night is the night of the senior ceilidh at my school. I've hired my kilt in the Black Stewart tartan (the shop didn't have my surname's tartan, so I decided on the tartan of my middle name...), and with it the jacket, the waistcoat, the seal-skin sporran, the shirt, the bow tie, the socks, the shoes, the noticeable lack of underwear, flashes, and a handy knife (sgian dubh).

The knife, unfortunately, is plastic. While it is probably illegal to hire a real knife, it is perfectly legal to have a sharp, real knife in the attire as long as it is tucked into the sock where it should be and in a sheath.

So, tomorrow night, I shall be dancing the St Bernard's Waltz, the Gay Gordons, the Dashing White Seargent, and countless others. Then a night on the town drinking cognac and fine Scottish Whisky until midnight (not too late, I have school the next day...) with a plethora of drunken Scots, all in kilts.

Do the other honorable gentlemen of the Org have such dances soon?

You mean you don't already own a kilt? Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm...

You really went all-out with the rental package, eh? It must have cost a bundle. Since I no longer go to school, I won't be going to any dance, but I probably will be drinking, and I'm sure there will be dancing (rocking out) after that gets into full swing.

No, because I live in a country of barbaric trouser-wearers I think I'll do some Midwinter sacrifice or Carousing instead, as it's the traditions we have over here

My College is Catholic, we don't do fun things like dances.

I think I have a christmas liturgy I'm supposed to attend, but they can go and screw themselves.

I live in England, I don't dance in kilts. I dance in matador clothes to Latin melodies.

They must be doing it in the maths block, because I haven't seen head nor tail of it.

I wondered what all of the noises coming from there were. This is better than my 'passionate about long division' hypothesis.

If I am sure of only one thing in life, it's that whereever the rumpy pumpy is in BKS's college, its NOT in the maths block. I suspect the ecstatic noises BKS hears are no more than the inmates' excitement at being introduced to a particularly thrilling differential equation.

haven't been to a dance in awhile, I never even went to prom. I guess I was discouraged after all of my one liners failed to pick up any of the seductive ladies...just the slutty ones, which I took full advantage of the situation. You know what I mean?

Still trying to find a nice red suit for our Christmas ball. Else I'm just going in my regular black suit, with black or red shirt. The music's arranged by the school sound squad, which means it'll probably be awful; alcohol is the only way out...

Buying the whole shebang as mentioned in my original post is very expensive, and getting a real sgian dubh will soon mean having to get a licence as well...

It wasn't too bad, £55 including damage waiver, but the choice of tartan was atrocious...

Don't try going to a school dance here in the US wearing a kilt without checking the dress code first.

He even promised to wear underwear, and they still sent him home.

The irony of this paragraph is delicious:
In 1993, a student in Fayette County, Georgia, was not allowed to enter his prom at McIntosh High School because he showed up in a kilt and refused to change clothes.

You need a license for a dubh? Most don't even come sharp, and they're hardly practical knives, more like male jewellery.

Yeah, variety in tartan rental is quite limited, but you paid about half what was the fee for the all-inclusive package when I used to rent kilts.

IIRC you are allowed to carry any knife if it is part of your national costume.

Not that that necessarily makes it a good idea and if you do get nicked don't expect the police to be too impressed when you say "But a guy at the Org said..."

Since I'm English does that mean I can wear a saxe and claim it to be part of my national custume? Or perhaps a red coat and musket may be more suitable for an Englishman. Or a blue coat and a dirk.

hmm... most of the ones I saw last night that were real were sharp. But the licence is in reference to calls to the Scottish Executive for people to have a licence similar to a firearms licence to purchase a knife.
