Girl first to win state prep wrestling title over boysAssociated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Michaela Hutchison became the first girl in the nation to win a state high school wrestling title while competing against boys.

Hutchison won the final of the 103-pound weight class during Alaska's big school wrestling championships. The Skyview High sophomore entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in her weight class.

Amid chants of "C'mon, Michaela" and "Girl power," Hutchison earned a 1-0 victory Saturday over Colony High School's Aaron Boss.

She scored an escape with 16 seconds left to beat Boss for the second time in two weeks. Family and friends mobbed Hutchison as she walked away from the mat with a bloody nose, while the crowd rose in a standing ovation.

"They were helping me," Hutchison told the Anchorage Daily News.

She finished the season with a 45-4 record that included 33 pins, one shy of the state single-season record. Hutchison is the third in her family of 10 children to win a state title, joining brothers Zeb and Eli.

How exactly are you supposed to wrestle a girl? Yeah yeah, please stop sniggering, I'm serious! Those guys look pretty... errr... friendly out there anyway, and with a girl, wouldn't the boys (or more likely coaches) be terrified of sexual harrassments? I wonder how that was dealt with. Probably a legal document long than her hair.

This reminds me of the military academies. Now I wonder how long it will be until we get a Dateline Katilsday report detailing how horrible anything with a Y chromosome is to girls who try to wrestle with boys, no matter that some just can't hack it.

On another note, is it still humiliating to lose an athletic event to a girl, even if she happens to be a state champion?

Got any pictures of this girl? As a former wrestler I must say my hats off to her . I find it hard to believe. I do know I would have a problem wrestling a girl. Well not really.

The thing is why should girls be allowed in mens sports and not vica versa or does society acknowledge mens superiority?

Careful, you might get all those latent feminists back here on you. Wait... this is a video game site. Nevermind!

Actually, I was worried when I saw the headline this girl was going to be in the superheavy weight class (you know, the 250lb+) and have a picture similar to Roseanne (eww, Bad mental image! bad! Roseanne in spandex). But she is in the 103lb so she is probably just your standard gangly high school girl athlete.

Or she could be gorgeous. Which could be the secret to her success. I dont see it though as to be a wrestler you have to rid yourself of all excess body weight, I cant see her having much in the breast and buns areas.

Just a tad too muscular for my tastes. Mind you, I wouldn't mind a woman who could kick my *** but she better look like something like Angelina Jolie, or some other super model

Theres no reason a 103 lb girl cant take a 103 pund guy. At that age especially. I wish I coulda wrestled girls. I would not have worn a jock strap, to psyche then out and get a cheap trhill all at once.

I'd loose to her every time and love it. Maybe not intentionally at first but if I had her in a hold and got a wiff of that hair...hmmmm. It would be, interesting.

It has got to be disconcerting for a guy to have to publicly grab a female opponent’s breast or buttock. I suppose we could determine that this is something males must learn to deal with, but we have already decided that in many arenas of public life, making women uncomfortable is unacceptable.

I think that is part of her advantage. 103lbs for a girl is healthy, 103lbs for a boy is anorexic. I knew wrestlers in high school, the lower weight guys were always getting sick.

Her other advantage is that basically her whole family wrestles.

Hey that was my weight class. Your right though. As I said you cant have any excess body fat as a wrestler. I cant tell you the torture we would go through to make weight. I dont see how having breasts that would add weight and not strength would be an advantage here. I doubt she has the stength of the boys. If you notice she has two older brothers who were wretlers. This probably has more to do with it than anything. It will be interesting when she gets to college where the boys continue to develope physically if she can keep it up. I for one doubt it.

Are you being sexist? I don't know of one female athlete that actually has boobies (while they are still athletes. Stop running, get boobs! I guess). Look at runners for example. A good friend of mine loves to run, and she has smaller boobs than my best friend in the Navy.

One of the great athletes to go through Kansas State in the past 20 years is Kendra Wecker. As an ankle-biter she won or tied (I can't remember) the national NFL punt-pass-kick competition. She is a fantastic all around athlete. But the anecdotes I heard about her on campus was that despite how good she was, most of the guys on a poor to middling mens B-ball team could beat her. Of course, being 5'11" is tall for a chick, but midget for a male basketball player. Still, the men could simply overpower her. Maybe she was quicker though.

I also heard that she is the 3rd of 10 (!!) kids to win state wrestling titles. So she has probably been wrestling in her family since she could walk.

Strike, I hope that 230 pound girl is tall. Really tall.

I know lots. In fact almost every female athelte at my school had them.

Im five foot five. At one theatre I worked at one of the girls was an all state center in HS basketball. She was five foot eleven. I was 30 years old at the time . She challenged me to a one on one game . I ate her for lunch and Basketball is hardly my best sport. Women muscles are not the same as mens. Its takes a truly great female athelte to compete against men. That why they have womens sports and men are not allowed to enter where as women can enter mens sports. Otherwise there would be no women in sports to speak of.

As to the likely build of the women athelete, runners, gymnasts and wrestlers tend NOT to have prominent teats, whereas other sports like boxing, swimming, softball etc. do not seem to favor the super-slim body type as completely.

This wrestler would be at a disadvantage in overall strength and especially in upper body strength -- though this is not as proportionally a problem in the lower weight divisions. She would have some advantage from a slightly lower center of mass.

discussions about her weight is irrelavent, simplistic fact is shes a very talented wrestler, i give to the donation drives whenever they need extra money for tourneys and such...

on a side note, shes a very pleasant young lady, her mom is our office manager, so we get the updates as it were almost daily.

Sweet, thanks jayrock. I just thought it was a neat story, but maybe some odd implications. I would love to know about the legalism that went into her being allowed to compete.

Thats what I said. Again having two brothers to spar with alll your life has to have some effect. Im amazed that she has the talent to make up for her natural disadvantage. Shes probably quick as hell. Another thing is women are generally more flexible than men. This could be an advantage in wrestling.

Aren't comparatively slim, small guys doing pretty well in sumo wrestling ? I seem to have heard something like that a while ago. Guess there's something to be said of agility and skill.

Good for her I'll bet her family is chuffed to bits for her, but as Gawain said, I would doubt she could keep up with the boys in later life. Some of the sports where I'd expect women to keep up with men if they were physically able are swimming, running etc.

It would be interesting to see play offs against the top seeds in tennis or squash.

We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? Is this an attempt at humor? I brought this event to the backroom because I thought it was interesting that in our age of Title IX, this is a first. And also wondering if the whole "are you emasculated if you lose to a girl" thing still applies when she is a champion (on her level).

I would say no, there is no shame to losing to the best, be they male or female, so long as you tried your hardest. The only thing that would be wrong would be if they let her win, which I'm sure is not the case here.

Anyway, my tuppence worth if anyone cares.
