Default Any Takers On A Fantasy TW?

Probably going to get slated for this
I know alot of people were hoping for a cival war TW coming out but!!! would anybody else like to see a Fantasy Total War game? I know there are lots of Warhammer games out there but not with the capabilities or fun of TW. This is going back to my Mega Drive games and playing Kings Bounty & Rings of Power. I know alot of players of this game are also historians and like the idea as I do of following in the path of there favourite era.
I wouldn't see that it would be much of a problem as I have seen a few Mods in progress (just waiting for Beta's to come out ) Just wondered how the Community out there feel about it.
Just think Elves, dwarfs, goblins, orcs, humans etc locked in an epic battle, think of the cultural penalities for a dwarf tribe taking over an elven haven.
Don't get me wrong, I love history and playing all TW games, and I am really looking forward to MTWII coming out but I would also like to play a Fantasy TW game as well.

I would like a fantasy game, too. But CA then has to invent a new historical background for that world. We all know something about medieval or roman history, but think if they bring out a game where all these fantasy-factions are already there and we have no relation to them. With no background it would be really boring I think. The problem is, that in TW games there is no storyline. Games, that have a storyline which you are in some way bounded to, are perfect for imaginative fantasy games. Short said: I think the battle map is well suitable for a Fantasy: Total War Game, but not the campaign map as it is now.

gotta be honest, I would puke if CA made a "Fantasy: Total War" and a LARGE percentage of the community was grumbling and groaning very loudly over the spring summer of last year when there was speculation of such.

Anyway, they're making MTW2 next (the fan favorite)...after they do an Alexander's Conquest expansion to RTW. Even if we did ever see a fantasy total war, it wouldn't be for several years yet. You gotta think, MTW2, then it's expansion (if there's only one), THEN looking forward to the next thing...that's three years right there.

I agree with Ivoignob about the game world/backstory problem. Creating a good fantasy world from scratch isn't that easy. Sometimes you'll get a company like Blizzard that has a knack for it (e.g. Warcraft series), but there are plenty of failures too. For example, the Kohan RTS games had a very good strategy/tactical engine, but it had (in my opinion) a cheesy backstory, and the faction designs were not all that creative and somewhat confusing to figure out.

Now, a died-in-the-wool strategy gamer can look past that and still enjoy the game (I did), but it can hurt a game in the marketplace if you don't pull it off as well as Blizzard does. Although the Kohan series is popular among a small hardcore group, it wasn't successful enough (apparently) to justify an expansion, and Timegate's next title will be a first person shooter, of all things. They seem to have dropped the Kohan series, which is a shame. The same thing could happen with CA, if they did a fantasy TW game.

Of course one solution is just to license an existing fantasy world like Lord of the Rings, or D&D, but that's already being done by other companies.

P.S. actually my personal "blue sky" wish would be something like a Fallout: Total War game... a post-nuclear Apocalypse kinda thing, with roving bands of humans, mutants, and radioactive zombies. I think it would be a perfect match for the TW game engine. But I think that's just about as likely as getting a fantasy-based TW game.

From the previews I've seen so far, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos looks to be very close to a Fantasy:TW. The strategic side probably will not be as involved (not as many "factions", unfortunately), but the battle map looks very similiar to RTW. It's due out about the same time as Medieval2.

When we are at Master of Magic, it is good example of how Civilization type of game can be changed to Fantasy type game.

It also shows that sometimes, even without backstory, it can make great game.

I support the idea but feel it’s certainly something that the Mod community should do rather than it be an Official CA release.

As you mentioned there are several in the pipeline but then the question is:

    “What fantasy genre?”

Some have gone towards Lord of the Rings, others have gone down the route of pre-empting the Games Workshop Warhammer game…..

…..personally I’d like to see one based on the Forgotten Realms books, but either way as long as a Mod has Elves, Dwarves, Humans and some other “evil” race it’ll do me.

One of the really good things about the Total War games is their Mod-ability. Even someone with vary basic knowledge can change the basic game to suit them in small ways. Those with greater knowledge can change it impressively.

What about a Harry Potter Total War?
Only kidding, I agree with most comments about this & would have to say for this to work they would have to liaise with Games Workshop alot. I think the map would be the big problem, story not so much. I also remember the big grumble about when it was thought that a Fantasy Total War was coming out, admittedly they may lose a few gamers but IMHO they would probably gain more that they lose because at the end of the day its a TW game, you'd still give it a try; wouldn't you?

The problem is that you can't make that gigantic of a shift in focus with your franchise with the hopes of expanding the user base, and at the same time keep your large loyal regular fanbase assured that this isn't a "change in direction" for the future of the franchise. If they were to start making a "Might and Magic: Total War" for example, the majority of gamers who are attracted to this franchise for a long time are going to get worried (again, back in the summer when there was speculation of this, this is exactly what happened). People get worried; Is this project the companies priority now? Which product is their "main" product...the historically accurate mainstream TW or the new fantasy style product? When they are both released and both need patches...which one gets done first? Which community gets more focus? What happens if either one is mediocre?

My last question there is the big one too...even if both products were stellar, you'd run into the problems I listed. If even one of the two was ANY bit less in quality as previous TW games have been, you have a big problem. Members of one side of the community will blame the other product, and visa versa. Let's say one is fantastic, the other one is "eh, ok". What will you do now...scrap the one project and end up right back where you started?

If TW was to do this (start making fantasy, and realistic TW games) this is not the time. If I were them and WERE planning on doing this (keep in mind I wouldn't...from a business angle as well as a consumer angle I wouldn't want it) I would take the following approach:

    1) offer Alexander TW as a purchasable expansion for only 14.95. However, if you preorder Medieval2 TW you get the expansion pack free with your preorder .

    2) include in Alexander's Conquest a demo for BOTH MTW2 and at the end of this demo, include a brief advertisement demo for your fantasy total war game.

    3) sit back and see what the community has to say...this feedback (that wasn't even requested, it will just naturally occur) will determine where they go from there.

heh...that works too, mod community puts in a good piece of work...problem solved. Not only that but you're getting a brand new "engine" to work with so to speak (type) when alexander/mtw2 come out.

either way, everyone can win on the issue, CA doesn't need to get involved, but if they did you saw my suggestion. Again though, if I were CA I would not spend resources on a whole new project.

Dwarfs? Goblins? What have you been smoking? "Fantasy" is not a synonym for "LOTR rip-off", as some people seem to believe and (disgustingly) encourage.

I would, however, like a Fantasy Total War that's not cliched, which is why I'm making a mod.

Fantasy Total war would be great

However I totally agree with the others who said that to be interesting on the strategic side it would need a coherent background/world.

The best way to achive this, would be to take the world from a well-known literrary work

Top of mind, the best i could think of are:

LOTR total war obviously (as it is the most coherent fantasy world ever)

Stormbringer total war (very dark and lively)

    Warhammer Total war

    Dragonlance total war

War of the jewels Total War (based on David Eddings novels)

Lyonnesse Total War (based on Jack Vance works)

    Conan Total War

Lankhmar Total War (based on Fritz Leiber epics)

    Any other ideas ?

Of course all of this ideas would create copyrights problem but one can always dream that Sega could cath the LoTR rights to make a proper LoTR strategic game and another MMORPG

Nah, originality is best. No need to take all your ideas from other people (besides, there are already WoT, ASoIaF and LotR mods going on, and those are some of the few series that deserve mods).

Anyway, if you're interested in participating in carving a fantasy univers, I suggest you come to the topics at the bottom of my signature. It has no elves or goblins (though it does have dragons), because if the real world proves anything to us it's that there's plenty of diversity within real people.
