I take it you're not familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos then ? If so, the matter should be rectified ASAP with a trip to a decent library or bookstore (or, if you're the unscrupulous sort, unabashed reliance upon online sources of debatable legality). That's some seriously classic literature, as well as an entertraining way to learn just how obscure and nigh-indecipherable adjectives the English language contains. Some Stephen King looks drained by a Colour Out of Space in comparision.
Ditto for Chaosium's by now downright ancient pen-and-paper RPG Call of Cthulhu, which if nothing else makes for a good "what's what in the Mythos" reference book.
