Thread: Your Favorite Roman faction?

    Default Your Favorite Roman faction?

Which are your favorite of the Romans, not including SPQR?

I personally like the Julii because the clour red is closely associated with the Romans. They do have the worst temples though. I am also a big fan of Gauis Julius Caeser historically.

I voted Julii. When I started RTW I wanted to play the blue Scipii for their colour. I now find I prefer the more land-based campaigns of the Julii. I have never played the Brutii mainly because of their green colour. It's sad that one's initial preference is purely based on colour I know !!

Would say both the Scipii and the Brutii are easier...so that would make the Julii the hardest roman faction

Scipii and Brutii have expansion possibilities to rich and coastal area's, plus the brutii 'll have the chance to get all of the wonders without to much trouble.

Also the Julii have the weakest temples, compared to the other Roman factions.

    On topic:

My favorite faction is the Julii, simply because I like their colour best ( blue and green ? ) and like their adversaries best, Gauls, germans, Spanish etc. etc.

I like the Scipii just because I think they're harder than the others. Julii go against very weak enemies and lots of cities all over. Brutii go against tougher enemies but great sea ports and fairly dense provinces. Scipii go against average enemes with few good sea ports except the cities are spread apart. Huge distance to capital penalties and hard to get 50 provinces. As Julii, take the whole top half of the map and you have 50 provinces. As Scipii, take the whole bottom of the map and have maybe 30 provinces. Also, I like how the Scipii have lots of options. You always have to start with Carthage but once their gone it's your choice who you fight next. Numidia, Spanish, Egypt, Greek Cities, Macedon. They're all available options for the Scipii. I also love their special ships. They're so powerful that you can pretty much control the whole Mediterranean. Endgame they can easily control all the wealthy ports and Civil War is no problem. You have enough ships to blockade every enemy port in the Mediterranean

The problem with the Julii is that a lot of the Gaulish provinces are good only for manpower with huge unit size. And they have to be garrisoned against Germans and Britons. I think that Londinium is probably the best province in that region. But it is hardly enough. That is why I will always try to take one or two cities the other Roman factions normally take. I might take Carthage or perhaps Sparta. Normally I like the Scipii. I take the African provinces and move my capital to Carthage. Sometimes I take a Greek city for the money. I tend accumulate units and attack Egypt through Siwa and try to land an army in Alexandria. I try to conquer its cities before they reach huge size and therefore become something of a pain. I really cannot abide that Brutii green.

I'm partial to the Scipiones. I think the Julii are the easiest faction, as you have this vast area open to your expansion. Even though it's the worst in terms of finances, you've got tons of room to conquer. Don't say they have the worst temples; I think the Jupiter is one of the best temples around, if purely due to the Priest of Jupiter ancillary you can get. The Bruti have insane finances and great xp from their temples, but they always seem to wind up with angry family members (from those Mars temples) and no Management (from excess money causing wasteful traits to constantly crop up). The Scipiones are the hardest starting position, but if you play it well, you have so many options you can turn it around.

Personally, what I usually do with the Scipiones is secure Sicily completely, make peace with both Carthage and the Greeks, then sail over to the Aegean. I take Kydonia and Halicarnassus (both rebel at the start), and then go back to war with the Greeks, taking Rhodes, Sparta, and possibly Athens if it's Greek. Once there, I can continue in the Balkans against Macedon, expand into Asia Minor against the Seleucids or Pontus (or finish off Greece), go back to Africa against Carthage, or head down to Egypt.

RTR forces you to be the Julii? I thought you could choose but basically you own the whole of Italy...

but I wouldn't know, because I don't play RTR, and won't by the looks of it.

RTR is a single Roman faction, the Republic of Rome. It's red, explaining why he says it's Julii.

I like the Julii the most. They have quite a few options after taking Segesta, Patavium and Melodanium. Then they can easily make a fleet and go to Greece or Africa to take those cities, and defending with the chokepoints in the Alps and weak barbarian troops should be no challenge to a decent player. The expansion into Europe is also good though, since the provinces are so close to each other and easy to take due to weak barbarian forces. Money is plentiful, since you can just slaughter each town and then start building up road networks very quickly. It also provides a base to recruit powerful units and train them up against the rubbish barbarians, while getting the best generals. The Bruti have harder fighting against the phalanx, and the Scipiones have too much land to cover. The Julii Ceres temple also allows your family size to keep up with Empire size, and quickly refills your newly-slaughtered provinces.

The Brutii not only have the best starting position, the best temples and access to the most densely populated and money-making area of the map (Greece) and lots of wonders, they are also up against the most interesting enemy armies: At first it's hoplite-heavy Greek and Macedonian armies, then Dacia comes along with their powerful yet barbarian infantry, and Thrace has a good mix of Greek and Dacia-style units. Next you'll possibly expand into Asia Minor and have the chance to face off against Pontus', Armenia's and the Seleucids' troops: mounted archers, Phalanges, heavy cavalry, chariots, even elephants! Playing Brutii, you get the most diversity in your battles, and to be honest, it's the battles that I love this game for.

I go for Julii. There's something about taking on the Gauls and barbarians that appeals more than the other factions. The other reason I like them is because when the civil war comes around, depending on how the campaign has gone so far, you're more likely to face tougher Roman opposition from the other families. The Brutii and Scipii should be fairly rich plus have loads of nice temples to give them some advantage over your own armies. The AI needs all the bonuses it can get.

I prefer the Scipii, because of their colour and they're starting position on the campaign map.
