Here's what the New Testament actually says in Revelation 13:16-18 (King James Version):

16 And he (antichrist) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six (666).

The New King James uses the word calculate instead of count. In other words, it will not be that simple to figure out. In reference to 17, and buying and selling, take a look at the image below. The number 6 is represented in the barcode as two thin lines close together. Now look at the three 6's at the beginning, middle, and end. 666 -
