    Default All New Medieval RPG

This game that I am about to tell you about is simply a combination of a few ideas I have had in the past. This is simply an RPG in which you take control of a nation in Medieval Europe/Middle East/North Africa at the time of 1100. The game is based around having as few rules as possible in an effort to keep simplicity and make the game enjoyable for everyone.

I used to play a game like this before, it was called 'The Ancient World'. It was like this one, except the moderators all had their own factions and it was set in the period of RTW. I had a lot of fun playing that game, but unfortunately it was destroyed when all the members moved onto a WWII based forum game instead.

It works like this: You post an RPG style write-up (or you could just make a simple post explaining what you did if you are strapped for time) explaining any action you wish for your country to make, and wait for it to be approved by a moderator. This action can be absolutely anything you want, as long as:

    a) It is realistic (otherwise it will not be approved)

    b) You are prepared to face the consequences (for example, if you were the Pope and you adopted Islam as your state religion you might expect there to be a bit of uproar among other nations, and more importantly among your own people (see below)

    c) Some areas, such as battles, will have advanced rules associated with them.

    d) You must also have enough money and be prepared to spend it, if you are making an action which requires a bit of dough.

Moderators will exist in the game not only to make sure there is no godmodding (for those of you that don't know, godmodding is the act of making an incredibly un-realistic action in an RPG in your favor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godmodding) but also to control the factions that are not controlled by other players, and to represent natural disasters, rebellions, uprisings, basically anything that happens outside a players control.

I hope I have made this explanation as simple as possible.

    Sign-ups:
WARNING!: This game is likely to take up a fair bit of your free time. Only join in if you have some extra time on your hands, especially if you want to be a moderator.

To sign up, simply post with the role you want to play (either a faction or a moderator) and if it is a faction, choose which faction you want. The factions are divided into Major Factions and Minor Factions. The major factions are all the factions that are required to have players in order for the game to begin.

Map of the extent of most European nations in 1100: http://www.euratlas.com/big/big1100.htm

    Moderators:
    Silver Rusher
    UltraWar
    kburkert

    Major Factions:
    English - Csar
    French - Ignoramus
Leon and Castile - Destroyer of Hope
    Almoravids - Monarch
Holy Roman Empire (this represents the German part, there will also be factions to represent the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Burgundy) - Keba
Papacy (I will think of a system to include papal elections, but remember that as the pope is elected, if you sign up to play as the pope your time as pope may not last long. Same goes for all other democratic factions) -GeneralHankerchief
Byzantine Empire (East Roman Empire) - Byzantine Mercenary
Fatimid Caliphate - The Grand Mufti: Orb
    Abbassid Caliphate - Bombasticus Maximus

    Minor Factions:
    Bohemia - Rhythmic
    Hungary - Conqueror
    Poland - SSNeoperestroika

Any other faction on this map, or even any other faction that existed in this time that is not included on the map (you must use evidence to back up your claim that this faction even existed at this time if you want to play as one of these)

There will be sign-up threads for this RPG in the ORG forums, the TWC forums and the .COM forums. The actual RPG itself will be played in an invision free board.

Hmm... sounds interesting. I'll take the Papacy since I'm not sure how long I'll be able to play this with my full attention.

I can take on the Holy Roman Empire, although I guess I would preffer a minor faction, such as Norway.

I have the time, and can write, although I never really wrote on the .org.

So what's it gonna be, Holy Roman Empire or Norway?

BTW, I think I might include the Kingdom of Burgundy and the Kingdom of Italy to follow under the rule of the HRE. I will leave that up to the Emperor's decision, however.

I will try to put it up once we have all our major factions.

I'm getting much more support for this than I expected.

Hmm looks interesting. I'd like to play as the king of Hungary

RTW, 167 BC: Rome expels Greek philosophers after the Lex Fannia law is passed. This bans the effete and nasty Greek practice of 'philosophy' in favour of more manly, properly Roman pursuits that don't involve quite so much thinking.

I'll be HRE, then. And it'll make things a lot more fun with Burgundy and Italy there as well, make a lot of trouble for the Emperor.

Not much action over at the TWC thread, unfortunately. But I'm glad to see so many people interested over here.

    You sure can.

Moderators will create uproars which represent the population's reaction to a certain decision. These could be rebellions, protests, riots etc. You can solve them however you like (this is a freeform game after all) whether it be by sending spies into rebel groups to root out ringleaders and have them executed, or sending your militia through the streets killing rioters. If there is a full scale rebellion, you will need to fight them in battle.

Which brings me onto my next point: You will fight battles like this. Each participant (if there is no player to represent one of the factions, a moderator will do it instead) sends a PM to a designated mod detailing his/her exact battle plan, including back-up plans for weather complications/enemy using unexpected tactics/anything that could happen on the battlefield that could go against the plan. It should be quite detailed, too. The mod in charge of the battle will then create a write-up of the battle, combining the plans of the two armies together, taking into account effects such as terrain type (the moderator will tell each player the terrain type before they send their battle plans) to produce an outcome.

If there a) is no military presence in that area to stop you, or b) the public support of that region for you is so great that they overthrow the previous rulers and instate you or c) the current presence in the territory surrenders, the area is yours. Exactly what amount of area that is will be dependant on the enemy's decision or on your own military presence, or on a number of other factors.

Money is a bit more complicated. I will come up with a good system when we start, but this is an outline of how it will work: Each faction has their own annual income which is calculated by the moderators based on many different factors, such as the population of your lands, the size of your army, your tax rate, the wealth of your people. It will also be possible to fund projects to increase your annual income. To cut down on complication, these annual incomes will be roughly estimated, so that it is fair in comparison to other richer/poorer states. You keep a reserve of this money which you can spend on whatever you want.

BTW: I have decided to scrap elections for all factions other than the Papacy. Any other democratic factions will be kept by whoever signs up for them. It could even be possible for another group of factions to create their own papacy-style establishment...

What will we use to show who owns what region/provence [will we be using a map from MTW/RTW or a custom made one? And will it mark out the influence of the factions?]

There will not be regions per se, each faction will own the land that they own as a result of any event in the game that changes land ownership. Any 'official' boundary between two players' land are decided by the two factions that share it.

EDIT: By the way Bombasticus Maximus, when you say that you want the Seljuks, do you mean the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum or the Abbassid Caliphate under Seljuk Rule? I should probably make the first post more clear.

    @Bombasticus: Yes, that's what I thought.

@Csar: I think making an alliance falls under the catagory of "do anything you want", plus it is realistic and has no special rules applied to it. The military strength and army locations of each faction will be documented with maps or something (I think)

Which reminds me, I should probably add to the first post that you need enough money to commit each action.

We need three more players (one for the Fatimids, one for the Almoravids and one for Leon and Castile) and maybe a couple more moderators, although they are not absolutely necessary.
