    Post Hello folks

    Hello people,
I`m new in this site. I played first MTW&VI, later RTW as I`m a great fan of Ancient Rome. I was reading the threads for many months without wanting to register, but one thing just forced me to do it. I was reading about how to play for Greek cities and 90% of ideas were to abandon some provinces , mainly Syracuse I think..

I play the TWs for two years or so but I never had to start a game with withdrawing from some province without a fight. Particularly in case of syracuse its easy to defeat the both armies which are attacking - -by counterattack. first turn I attacked romans in massilia - on tactical map greeks (us) deffended the hill (always comes from downhill) and its easy to deffend with hoplites. the army of cartagians was easy to defeat also. Its possible on VH/VH also.

But I think I willl have to post this somewhere else anyway, some time later after I get some permission, as I understood. I just had to cry this out.

Anyway I`m having great fun with TW`s and these forums gave me so much already (it was here where I learned to earn my first million in MTW through trade )

    thanks folks

Welcome Riman. Good luck on building your post rating. I understand it gets easier to post when you have done so.

Keep asking questions. No such thing as a silly question, but as with any forum you can get silly answers!

    Welcome Riman.

I totally agree with you about keeping Syracuse, btw. It's entirely possible to do -- at least on H/H, where I play RTW. Although, in my case it meant years of siege defense battles, because I waited for the AI to make the first move: I'm a turtler like that. Still, nobody can handle a siege defense like the Greeks.

People say the same about Carthage too - people can be wrong. My advice for the Greeks at syracuse is to take all the units you can muster on the first turn (including all the mercenaries available) and attack the Roman free standing army. They will fight with support from the units in the town. Kill them all and just stroll into Messana! You have kicked the ROmans off sicilly on the very first turn!

You now have 2 towns to replace your losses and bolster your numbers to take on the Carthage army. So do that on the next turn (if Carthages army is still on the island - sometimes they leave on boats!). Once they are beaten siege their town. Hoplites vs Town Militia = win for you!

You have a massive advantage in town happiness at the start so use / abuse it.

3 turns, 2 cities, 1 completely liberated issland. Piece of p**s.

PS: It may take 4 turns if no-one builds roads!

welcome to the org. btw dont abondan your cities they are useful! in syracuse recruit one militia hoplite for the initial siege against the scipii. and with your armies in sparta, attack corinth with your army in sparta. except militia hoplites or peasents. make sure you manage Rhodes and Pergamum. if you want make an army in rhodes and sail ovet Halicarnussus and take it over if you want. or ally with Macedon and attack when your ready. becareful though if you wait too long Macedon will field large armies that will be a pain. but always do this:
in syracuse recruit one militia hoplite for the initial siege against the scipii. make sure you manage Rhodes and Pergamum.
after your done doing this attack more Macedonian cities Larrissa and Thessalonica ithink, take care of the inevitable Roman assault either Larissa or that other city nearby. (forgot the name) also you may consider fielding an army in Syracuse in to take over Sicily and head over to Italy or Carthage.. if you can recruit Armored Hoplites in Syracuse. or if you want (after you have fended off Roman assaults) attack their foothold in Greece. (Appolonia) now you are ready to attack Italy or finish off Macedon. be wary of Thrace and Dacia though...

    hope that helps!

I would expect that if you wait in Syracuse even for a turn, they will be building and then shipping over more Roman units (yuck!).

The thought of ever abandoning a province to the enemy puts a sick lump in my throat, abandonment of rightful territory is a sacrilege! \

Oh..welcome to the org by the way.

Newbie myself, but welcome to the org.

I agree with you: to abandon provinces without a fight is just not done, even if it would make things a lot easier, I will never leave my territories without a good fight! And if someone manages to take one of my territories, I'll go after them until the entire faction has been destroyed! Even if I have to change my entire planning on the strategic map. Ask those damn Vandals who dared to take Campus Frisii from my Saxon Empire lately... They are all exterminated and their skulls decorate my tables now. HA !
