Default DC United and Real Madrid! Woo!

Well, I'm going to my first pro soccer game - a match between DC United and Real Madrid.

So, what should I do to prepare, besides the usual preparations for pro sports games in stadiums? Any tips from those lucky to have great soccer clubs left and right?

Have a few pints (number dependant on bladder control, its 45 minutes to half time don't forget) and a dodgy "meat" pie (is it cat? is it horse? who knows) on the way to the stadium...

    Thats what we do anyway.

Scope out an OK pub for after too.

Make sure you learn a few good footy chants. You'll look a bit of a numpty if you can't sing along.

Well, the problem here is that the match is in Seattle, so the usual DC fans won't be there to chant, drum, and sing along. You might want to check out the Seattle Sounders website, or the Sounder Central forum to see if the locals are organizing any chants.

I hope Real Madrid or they can be rather a shamed of them selves. They already should be tough.

You might be surprised. DC United is the best team in MLS, they are in mid-season form, and they definitely want to make a good showing. Real Madrid haven't played a real game since May, and probably just want to get through this exhibition without getting any key players hurt. Eight of the DC players were on the MLS all star team that beat Chelski 1-0 Saturday, and DC pummelled Celtic 4-0 in an exhibition in July.

All things being equal, I don't think Madrid would have any problem beating DC, but all things are not equal for this match.

It's only a friendly. DC will probably take it deadly serious, Real will just prat around - like they do a lot of the time in La Liga anyway.

Wait, Real Madrid are playing DC United in Seattle????

My geography is not the best, but wtf?

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high that this will be the same Real Madrid that would turn out to play in the European Cup final. Sorry if that sucks, but these pre season "tours" of the States are mostly a way to milk the franchise and rip off Americans (are you listening Glazer Brothers?)

BTW beating Celtic proves nothing. One of the perennial debates in English football is whether Celtic or Rangers could even survive in the premiership (answer: no).

Mind you even Real Madrid B would play good football.

MOST IMPORTANT - DONT CALL IT SOCCER

    1. make sure you have the lastest shirt
    2. make sure you know what time kick-off is and what the traffic will be like around the ground
    3. Try to find a safe way to get the ground without having to drive, so you can enjoy No.4
    4. Find a great pub and arrive a few hours before kick-off
    5. Have a few drinks to get the sinking voice in tone
    6. Make sure you get to your seat to see kick-off. Nothing makes me more angry that the rush five minutes before kick off.
    7. Get you match programme
    8. Enjoy the match
    9. Go home safe.

Or you could just sing your heart out and abuse the ref.

Never, ever leave before the final whistle, it is a carndinal sin to do this. Even if your 'team' are three-nil down. Enjoy.

Whilst the numerous suggestions to visit a friendly pub are nice, I must remind you fellows that this match is in Seattle. So even though I can own a semi-auto AR-15 with 30 round mags, join the army and go to the 'stan to kill people, not to mention vote and get married, I can't drink.

Good thing we didn't get the $100+ seats then. Oh well. It'll still be fun for us soccer hicks.

Thanks for the tips people! Soon, I'll be off!

1-1 draw, to a sold out crowd (66k, good job Seattle!). What did you think the match, CR?

Actually, the crowd was 66,830 - a record for soccer crowds in the Pacific Northwest (not that that's saying much).

Freddy Adu got the most cheers on teh DC side, and Beckham got a roar from the crowd-you could see him smiling on the giant TV they have.

The match was decent. No great plays or effort by Real Madrid, who were characterized by missed goals. One ball was batted around in front of DC's goal, before being cleared. Best moment of the game.
Two more were missed at close range. Another Beckham almost headed in, but wasn't tall enough.

About half the Madrid team got subbed off during the half. A bit dissappointing. But a fun match, even though we were in the nose bleed seats. I took a couple pics, I'll post'em later.

Oh, and this picture was on the front of the Seattle PI:

I see Real as taking it easy, not playing neer full speed for fear of injury. I am a Chelsea FC fan and I think that was the case for Chelsea against Liverpool and against MLS All-Stars. I would drink a few pints and go to the game with friends. If you are a diehard fan of one team, friends you can trust in a fight.
