    Default Typical Americans

Since it's okay to point out just how stupid Americans are, let me actually show you the depths we sink to... I don't think Canadians or Europeans truly grasp just how profoundly stupid we truly are...

Here's Ms. America, 1995. Time can take a toll...You mean you REALLY have to brush every day?

Here's our Secretary of Health & Human Services having a discussion about exercise with the chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness

Here's the winners of "Who wants to get out of the trailer park" reality show. While not your typical American couple (they only share two family ties on their family tree, most of us have at least 4) we're proud of them, none-the-less...

Here they are again, on their cruise down Pennsylvania Avenue...

Here's our esteemed board of directors for the National Academy of Sciences:

And here's two of them, testing an advanced scientific theory... as it turns out, yep, gravity DOES ACTUALLY WORK, even in Oklahoma. Nobody can say we haven't done our part for the development of civilization....

Oh Don come on. What do you want others to say. Yes you're right, you're always right? So we can't disagree anymore. And did somebody ever said the average American has a brain the size of a peanut or something? No! the writer of the article perhasp, but an Organism?
Only some Organisms disagreed with you when it comes to the evolution theory. This is nothing to get upset about is it?
you dissappoint me. As I always saw you as an intelligent man, a good man. as I read more posts in the backroom then I reply to them.

No, Gert, you're absolutely right! We're dumber than you think... forget evolution... we can't even get sex education right...

And here's the results... now how are the twins going to explain this one to Mom & Dad... junior's already married to his older sister...

But you know, just like you enlightened Europeans, we too have gay marriage....

And we loved your idea about hot tubs... but we thought we needed to 'tweak' it a little...

Here's your typical red-blooded Yank, trying his damndest to provide for his family:

Well, looks like the Europeans were right, and all this pollution has killed the local wildlife. He's gonna have to pack up and try someplace else...

OOOPS! Stupid me, I forgot... we always have to close any sentiment with "God Bless America"

When have I said such a thing? When has any other .org guy said such a thing.
Are you haerd that much by an Article written by an uknown? Come on. He hasn't done his homework that's clear. You're not angry about this because some of us just have other oppinions about the evolution theory? I really don't understand what has angered you except for a stupid article people shouldn't care about.

Well, I did get a little hot under the collar when my thread highlighting the faulty logic in the study of Americans and evolution got locked. Call it too much coffee or too much hangover, but I went a little off the deep end, hence this thread.

You're right Gert, I don't know why I let stuff like this get me so upset. I know we're not a bunch of knuckle-dragging neanderthals, regardless of what rigged 'studies' or threads in the Backroom say.

Anyway, I suspect the reason this thread didn't closed is A) it's kinda funny (and it disarmed my temper, now I'm just doing it for grins) and B) I suspect most folks believe there's some truth in it.

Well, now that we're into the laughing phase, feel free to post a few of your own. As dumb as we are, one thing you have to say is we can at least take a joke & laugh at ourselves...

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

    Some Americans.

Yanks are'n't any dumber than any other nationality. Wait for it! However, they are'n't what you would call the worlds best internationalists. Introspective and inward looking would be a fair description of most of those who don't hold a passport and those that hav'n't, used them. This is true of many nations, but look at the percentage of USA citizens with US passports.

This is double-trouble when you are perceived, quite rightly, as the worlds only superpower, a monopolar world, if you like. The only Yanks I've met have come to Europe, some to live, others to visit....so perhaps my observations are skewed.

Oh...and Don don't get your knickers in a twist, will you?
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

In all sincerity, I think that's because the US is such a large and diverse country. Beautiful beaches? Check. Huge mountains and forests? Yup. You name it and we've pretty much got it here- all under a common language and a mostly uniform set of laws- without the need for a passport.

I think its also fair to say that most people would find neither of those countries particularly appealing to visit. Certainly there are spots in Mexico that attract vacationers, but overall there's just not much incentive to go there or to Canada.

Still, I think its perfectly safe to say that Americans are, on average, not very knowledgable about the rest of the world nor much interested. We're content to enjoy our freedoms and ignore the rest of the world's problems. Now, I am from a small town in Alabama, so I suppose the sampling of the populace whom I base my observations on were hopelessly ignorant to begin with, but I feel like I could confidently claim that no one I know well (who hasn't played TW games) could guess which continent Armenia is on. Most probably don't know that South Africa refers to an actual country. And those who didn't have relatives in the Korean War probably don't know which Korea is evil (just kidding).

I'll admit something that I'm kind of afraid to say. Its likely due to our media's bias for negative news, but I never seem to hear positive things about other parts of the world and it seems to have impressed upon me that most other places are poor, corrupt, and chaotic. That's what I generally assume about countries I know little about. I realize that I'm most likely sadly mistaken, and hope that I am, but that's honestly the way I think and its obvious in others. I think that's even true of Americans' view of different American regions. Most media I'm exposed to portrays cities as scary, unfriendly, dangerous places, and not suprisingly do I not only have no desire to live in one, but I can't imagine why anybody would. Maybe most Americans aren't like me, but if they are, it would go a long way to explain our cultural introvertedness.

Well, I´ve been to South Africa.
Before a trip to Durban they told me it was dangerous there and we would only go to the somewhat safer part. Stories about taxi drivers shooting at each other over a passenger. Well, when we were there all that indicated that crime might be around were a lot of guards with submachineguns(who actually made me feel rather safe).
When travelling to Prague we were told about having to be careful because of higher crime rates, well, I walked home with only a friend at night, nothing happened on the whole trip.
Maybe I was just lucky, maybe my belief in god helps, but in my limited experience I witnessed more violence in primary school than in any "really" dangerous area I´ve been to, so my personal views are also somewhat spoiled. Then again, I´ve never been to a real warzone.

Canada is actually a pretty popular destination over here, at least it's one of those countries people mention they would like to travel to if they had the money. It's mostly the Rocky Mountains that attract. I know a guy going to Mexico in a few days, not sure why he wants to go there though. The US used to be a VERY popular dream destination (California, mostly) but isn't that high on most people's list anymore.

That said I'd still like to fly to LA, rent a car, visit the national parks in the 'area' and lose some money in Vegas

I think the problem is stereotypes. French are arrogant, Dutch are avaricious, Americans are gunslinging morons, ...

These things aren't necessarily true (however some have or had some truth to them). The thing is that we see actions of those groups in light of those prejudices and by doing this enforcing those prejudices.
