Joey was a "special" kid that use to eat his buggers in front of the class room for show and tell. With Jesus, those bugger eating days are over. Sure, last week Joey required 15 stitches on the top of his head and 2 days in a coma after a bowling ball he tried to juggle for the class landed squarely on his head, but with Jesus anythings possible...Originally Posted by Sasaki Kojiro

The problem with your analogy is that I would be another gay man, but one who could laugh about it. I can't imagine apologizing about anything I've said re: Christians and Christianity, especially seeing as I am one. If you'll recall, Jesus himself had a bit of a problem with people who mixed the profit motive and faith.Originally Posted by Don Corleone

How come they have to be the English Flag? Why couldn't they look any different. Obviously aimed at the English Football fans or Episcopalians. Doesn't God say not to advertise your "Christian-ness"? Despite being Christian, I do not think this was a good idea and this thread has become hijacked. Damm hijackers!

We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

No stories here. I just find your "Hey, Im a Christian too- you just dont have a sense of humor" defense to be pretty weak when you dont believe Jesus was the Christ. No inquisition here either- you can call yourself what you want, I just don't think it appropriate to try to use your Christianity as cover for criticism.Originally Posted by Lemur

Xiahou, we're going to have to agree to disagree. If following the teachings of Jesus does not make one a Christian, and one must subscribe to the entire Nicean creed to be in the club, then most of our founding fathers were not Christian by your lights. Very sorry I don't believe in the literal divinity of Jesus. Remember that christos literally means anointed, not "physical embodiment of divinity."
I still don't see why poking fun at gaudy, tasteless attempts to capitalize on Christianity is offensive to you.
Could you please explain what you mean by the Christ? If that refers to his so-called divine nature, then the man could possibly be one of the Christians (here the term encompasses all faiths based on a common belief, whether they are Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Romano-Cahtolicism, or any of other beliefs possible) that Jesus was simply a mortal inspired by God to spread faith.Originally Posted by Xiahou
OK, call me a cynic regarding the pictures, but if he's here with us always, where's the ones of women in the shower with Jesus peaking over the top?
I constantly have these [utterly pointless] conversations with my girlfriend who will glibly say that God is always with us. I then point out that the sick b*****d seems to be there when one hell of a lot of pain and suffering occurs but doesn't lift a finger. Similarly with these pictures - why not have Jesus pushing the finger of a man holding a gun, or tripping an old lady down the stairs?

Yeah, then you get into "The Bible was written by men - with free will - yet is the last word and work in Christianity". All other material that was removed or not cannonised was chosen by man with his free will... oh, except that this was a faultless process with no errors whatsoever (as there have been few revisions).Originally Posted by kataphraktoi
Free will appears to be used to excuse God from everything in the world that is bad whist is not addressed in relation to such things as the succession of Popes, religious pronouncements or even holy scriptures.
If free will is taken, there is no certainty of anything that is written by men over time. So people are then following the altering egos of powerful men. Whether God was present at some point becomes less and less easy to discern.

Yeah, the literal translation of christ is "annointed one", but in terms of the Christian faith it refers to the biblical Jesus Christ, which in addition to being our source for almost everything we know of Jesus' teachings- also speaks of his divinity and resurrection. You do have a point about our founding fathers- many, iirc, would be considered Unitarians which, technically, are not Christians and most modern Unitarians don't consider themselves Christians as far as I can tell. However, Unitarians did and generally do have a strong reverance for our Judeo-Christian tradition.Originally Posted by Lemur
*Somewhat tangentially, Im puzzled by how Unitarians can subscribe to the teachings and moral authority of Jesus (which we get from the Bible), while apparently dismissing the clear references to Jesus as the Son of God- His own statements, as well as his resurrection. I never said I found it offensive. I said they look silly- like something Ned Flanders would buy his kids, but said (later) if someone bought them and their kids wanted to wear them, I could care less. I wasnt upset by the thread topic, I just commented that I didnt really think it fair to say "Im a Christian too" as a defense, when (at the very least) your beliefs are outside what's generally considered Christianity.I still don't see why poking fun at gaudy, tasteless attempts to capitalize on Christianity is offensive to you.
