Yeah he did okay. Was always avaible to pass at, good positioning. Had two chances and scoring and made himself another chance on his own by using is body well. The shot that followed could've been better though. Also not that when Mata scored his goals, Lukaku was alone and free before the goal ready to tap the pass in. Mata however chose to do it himself from a more difficult angle and position. He's lucky he scored or he could have gotten some bad reactions. I think he already is fitting in. While not yet on the level of the blue regulars, he clearly is made for the EPL. Give him some time and the Belgium squad will have a world class attacker.

Should Mertesacker get the captain's band today, or should Arsene wait a game or two?

Arteta is a good player. But I don't see Arsenal playing for anything higher than 4th spot with this one. I hope they'll be doing their homework before the winter and sign names to make them a top team again. If not, I don't expect too bright a future for them this year.

Edit: @ Drone. That'd be to soon I think. But perhaps it's not, you have to feel how the players and team feel about it. IS Arteta a candidate for being captain?

It would be a bit of a kick in the face of van Persie to give him the armband then take it away a few weeks later. I don't see Arsenal finishing in the top four, for me United or Citeh for the title (hopefully United), Chelsea a bit back, Liverpool way behind but still comfortably fourth, with north London's finest battling for fifth.

It depends. Perhaps RVP doesn't want to be captain. One has to feel his players and talk with them. Only then can you make the right decision. About your expectations. Yeah I think you are right. Though we should give Liverpool and Chelsea a bit more time and credit to prove themselves. Liverpool is in an upwards spiral and have a much better team now. City looks very dangerous though.

Maybe I'm just old-school, but the captain should be either a central defender or holding midfielder. That way the strikers and other glamour boys can be as arrogant and immature as they want, and concentrate on just putting the ball in the net. RVP knows his job, and his mates know his ability, but he doesn't always set the best example. Sad to say, but van Persie was the default choice before the transfers (who else would it have been?), which shows how bad the situation had gotten. Cesc should never had been captain in the first place, his heart wasn't in it.

Improvements were made, but I agree with you guys. 5th or 6th is most likely. 4th if Chelsea (the likeliest candidate) gacks it.

Before the transfer period I would have picked Vermaelen if he was fit.

    Belgium - USA: 1 - 0

Again it was unnecessarily tense until the last wistle. Belgiums main quality used to be beeing able to get results. Now that there is a massive amount of talent, suddenly noone is able to keep there heads cool.

What did you expect if you substitute three players at once and change the system completely. Especially if one is actually not good enough (Hubert), one is barely fit and has barely played (Ogunjimi) and one is mentally unfit (Lukaku). Leekens really does do strange things at times. Also everytime Ciman plays, my first reaction is: why? Okay we had quite a few injured. But I'd rather had Van Damme or Tshimanga playing at the left back, while Alderweireld played right back. Oh well, we won and that's the most important thing.

But it should have been a bigger margin according to the chances and USA was (rightly?) denied a goal. And besides, results in friendlies don't count.

Also, congratulations with the qualification for Euro 2012.

You're top favourites, along with Germany and Spain.

I don't see anyone beside those 3 winning.

I wouldn't go quite that far. We have some fundamental problems, and the talent drops off considerably past the top 5-6 players (who are aging rapidly). It's never a good sign when the man of the match is usually the keeper. Klinsmann has a lot of work ahead to get a better youth system in place.

Klinsmann has enough to do simply to prove he is a capable coach. Tactically clueless in his time at Bayern, utterly hopeless without Jogi Löw. Tough road ahead for the US.

And apparently he was on par with the rest.

No one seemed to make combinations in the box. The moment they can shoot on goal they do even when there was a far better option. The only time there was a pas from someone in the box it resulted in a penalty and a red card.

what are they saying? btw he might be overreacting but the red dude did step on his foot really dirty... he deserves a red card for that. might not hurt might not injure but its just bad behaviour that doesnt belong on the pitch.

anyone seen the big blunder of the dutch linesman in ajax vs twente

he flags offside while the guy that lifts it is literally standing right in front of him...

Both Sevilla lads provoked the Valencian. Yes, the Valencian step on his foot but the Sevillian did it first! It was all made up by the Sevillians in order to sent off the Valencian...

Fabianski is threatening to leave because he's not getting first team time. What's French for "Don't let the door hit your on the way out"?

I just watched the Arsenal-Porto CL game from 2010 on FSC (yes, I'm bored). Two things stood out. 1. Arshavin's work rate was outstanding, he was up and down the left side like crazy. 2. Granted I'm stuck with the whims of US TV programming, but I think that's the first time I've actually seen Vermaelen play. As we all know it was 4-nil Arsenal, but now I'm just depressed.
