Thread: Backroomers: WHY do you come to the ORG?

Default Backroomers: WHY do you come to the ORG?

Seriously. I find myself asking this of myself constantly. Why. I stopped playing TW liked several months ago when my comp shut down. But here I am.

I posted this in the backroom and target this to backroomers because we are a unique breed here. Many dare not even stray here lest they be eaten alive.

Here is why I think I keep coming back:

    (1) Variable ratio reward.

    (2) People who at least like some of the same crud I like (TW)

    (3) Updates on M2TW

    (4) EB (though this actually makes me sadder every time)

    (5) I dunno. I like some of you suckers. You make me laugh. I hope I do the same.

    (6) A place to vent when I am drunk. (Venting is minimal since my life rocks so hard I only need to vent politically.)

    (7) To see why europeans hate me so.

    (8) All my real life friends don't play TW. (They go on myspace these young jerks.)

    (9) The backroom is a good proving ground for certain ideas.

    (10) Penis. Edit: Just so you know I drank 2 bottles of wine so I am jovial as of right now. yuk yuk yuk.

This is the only online community where I feel "at home". Nowhere else do I discuss, give advice or post just for fun. TW has just been catalyst. I have no intention to start up a whole new "get accustomed and known" proces on a new forum even though I no longer play TW.

I haven't touched a TW game in months (not quite true - I played Alexander for about two hours and gave up).

I have found this to be an ideal place to get news snippets that actually interest people plus I get to read all the different opinions on things. It's really rather interesting, you know. I seldom post anything noteworthy in the backroom or anywhere else for that matter. Usually, I stray off topic and just make some snide remark about something or other.

So, I don't know why I come here...Maybe I just like it here...

I like the posters here. I rarely play TW anymore, but I'm fascinated by the historical knowledge of posters. Where else are you going to get the debate such as the one current between Reenk Roink and Horatious?

There are challenging posters in other ways - Don, Xiahou, Vladimir, Cube and the conservatives all have hugely differing views from my own about just about everything yet I cannot dismiss them as irrelevant because they argue concisely, forcefully and provocatively - I have to think, I have to challenge my paradigm. There's no comfort zone in the Backroom. But the level of politeness as well as passion (due gratitude to the moderators as well as the posters) makes it a fun visit. (Mostly).

Others, like Tribesman, I have huge respect for, not just because I share many of his views but because his infernally frustrating posting style forces me to think even about my own evidence. I'm jealous that he and others are so well-informed. I like that there are people of my own generation like English Assassin and Insane Apache as well as hugely mature young people (you guys really restore this grumpy old man's faith in young people )

I learn a lot here. I have come to feel a part of a group of people, some friends, some less so, but all enjoyable to hang out with. I hope I contribute a little in return. (I mention names not to single people out, but as examples). I like the multi-cultural rainbow of posters here - from across the world. It's just a pity we don't have more women to help inform our debates. It's a bit like my club in London.

On a practical note, like today, when I find myself with writer's block, or in the search for inspiration about my next article, I visit the Backroom. There's usually something that will fire me to post, and presto, the words start coming and I can turn to what I should be writing. Eventually. After another cup of tea.

I got an e-mail from Papewaio telling me to sign on and get to work....

You mean it's NOT required that we post X times a week? You're sure?

...and what is this TW stuff anyway?

    Oh well, back to work.

Ok the reason I’m quoting this is NOT only because my nome de guerre is mentioned, but the importance I place on the bolded; especially on challenging dominant paradigms.

That also is the primary reason I come here, mostly during work, because it does none of the above.

I still play MTW, follow the progress of M2TW, and like to see the different points of view from around the world. I have learned more about history (ancient and recent) since I have been here than in all my schooling. Lurking the Backroom has been an eye-opening experience, and has definitely made me question the competency of the American news media.

Plus, the Org is a (fairly) mature refuge in the Internet wasteland.

say what you like about the backroom, the quality of the comment and the diversity of the posters holds up pretty/very well compared to any other forum or even real life.

I use some other forums but never leave the technical pages, this is the only one where I bother with general chat.

I was a long time lurker here, checking the EB forums.

My initial reason for registering was to make a suggestion for EB.

The variety of things here is so great though that I go for a little of everything.

I still lurk on EB like crazy.

The Backroom of course, where although things do get intense, people are usually intelligent and quite restrained in relative terms.

The Frontroom is great fun for a variety of reasons, the forum game Mafia being the main attraction.

The Monastery is the place I always enjoy visiting, merely browsing through the many threads that interest me.

The Arena is always a refreshing place to visit once in awhile, and gives good info on other games that I might be interested in.

Used to be a frequent chat room patron, though my trips have lessened due to busy stuff.

And we have an Arcade! With fun games!

The people are the thing that make a forum great, and the Org is witness to that. Here people are helpful, friendly, polite, and intelligent on general.

There's very few dialogue exhanges, either in other corners of cyberspace (are we even supposed to use that word anymore?) or in real life where people can get into such heated debates, yet simultaneously maintain a respect for each other. There's one or two issues where I've learned to keep my cards closer to my chest, but for the most part, I find you all to be an incredibly entertaining, witty, well informed and even likeable group. Often times its the people with whom that I disagree with most on issues that I find the most engaging. I can't go giving any of you commie pinkos swelled heads so I'll just keep it in the generic. I also find quite a few of the folks that I tend to agree with rather intriguing, as frequently they get me to look at an issue that I thought I understood in a different light... same conclusion but different thought process getting there.

Anyway, I enjoy everyone's contributions. Much like a real tavern, it's good to have a place to blow off steam and shoot the bull. Just a shame we can't get REAL beer to come out of the monitor...

though i have not been on for like a month, i feel at home here where some of the people are actually vaugely intelligent, try finding that on myspace . plus i am thinking about going into polotics in a few years and the years of pointless internet debating may help me.
