Gladiator was a pretty good one, IMHO.

Hmm...without a doubt Gladiator was a great period piece.

There was this other movie concerning Julius Caesar, with that guy from Law and Order and Sex and the City starring in it. Forgot what name it was, but I guess it looked kinda decent.

I haven't watched Caligula, but I heard about it?

    How was it?

Not a movie, but a really really good uncensored HBO series called "Rome". It does go into detailed character development, but meshes best with the game in terms of putting definite faces and personalities on the various Roman factions. The show is very impressive in giving a feel for the power and glory of Rome. Season 1 is over and available on DVD (like a 15 hour movie) Season 2 is coming up fairly soon.

Though it goes pretty far in detailing the political struggle, it also centers around the discontent felt by the prīmus pīlus, the Centurian leading the First Cohort- an honorable pleb who is unhappy about following Gaius Julius after Julius is outlawed by Rome. Hes loyalties are torn between his legion and Rome, between his loyalty as a soldier and his loyalty to the republic. Its some good s**t

Ah I remember now, yes, thank you for the reminder GottMitUns.
"Rome", yes thats a very good series as well.

Hmm, another movie, possibly ranging into the B movies, is this piece called
"Amazons and Gladiators". Something like that...

I saw it on FOX after midnight, during the summer.
It was...an acquired taste...guess thats why I didnt finish watching it.

    Anyone see that one?

Rome was an excellent series, and currently BBC1 in UK is showing a series:
Ancient Rome: The rise and Fall of an Empire.
So far they have covered the fall into insanity of Nero; the Civil war between Ceaser and Pompay, and the Rebellion of Tiberius Gracchus voice of the people against a corrupt Senate.

All good stuff, a docu-drama rather than a movie though.
Gladiator is still the top of that genre.

I’ve yet to find a Movie that’s really accurate – Gladiator is a good movie but still has lots of elements of fantasy about it.

“Rome” the BBC/HBO mini-series was excellent and pretty accurate though limited in its scope. I heard there was a 2nd series coming soon but haven’t had a chance to confirm that. 1st series is available on DVD so that’s great.

Ancient Rome: The rise and Fall of an Empire – Oh yeah, properly the most accurate depiction of Rome and the Roman era (just look at the Republican troops!) a really great Docu-Drama series.

Unfortunately I missed most of last nights (Tiberius Gracchus) as I was……playing Rome! Still next weeks is possibly the “year of the 4 Emperors” if my assumption is correct from the pre-show trailer.

Edit: Ok checked, the HBO/BBC “Rome” is back soon. Production filming was finalised this week. YAY!

Further Edit: Ancient Rome: The rise and Fall of an Empire the BBC Docu-Drama mentioned above will be released as a DVD on 23rd of October (info via Amazon)

AND, have confirmed that next weeks episode is supposed to be the “year of the 4 Emperors” and the rise of Titus Flavius Vespasianus (which I find odd as the Trailer mentioned a “father and son” team – where as Vespasian was 60 when he became Emperor?? They may be referring to Vespasians sons though…). The last episode is entitled Constantine so I’ll let everyone guess what’s that about.

Never seen "Rome" but from what you say sounds good.

Gladiator is the most historically unaccurate garbage I ever saw :P

Sparticus has alot of falsehoods in it aswell.

The best Rome movie of all time is Cleopatra. It's a 2 disc movie from the 60's

Staring Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Richard Burton as Marc Antony and Rex Harrison as Gaius Julius Caesar. Starts at the end of the final battle between Caesar and Pompey and ends at the Death of Cleopatra and Antony after Agrippa, Octavians General defeats Antony in a sea battle and the chase them back to Egypt.

    Excellent movie.

Another good movie, though also historically inaccurate like Gladiator or Sparticus is Attila. I think it was a made for T.V. movie but I rented it once so it's at least on video. Had a classic scene where Flavius Aetius is in prison, the guard spits on him, 5 minutes later the Roman Emperor orders Aetius to be released and put in command of Rome's armies to fight off Attila. Guard wanted to kill himself I think. "Release him... He's your new Commander" GULP!

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

I'll have to check out that "Rome" series.

I've seen Gladiator and Sparticus. Not bad movies and of course Sparticus is a great classic.

When I was younger I had the habit of going to movies stoned off my tree. This made movies very entertaining but unfortunately it also had the side-effect of making them rather difficult to remember. What did stick though was a scene at the beginning of a movie where there was a Roman army in Northern Europe. It was cold and there was artillery and flaming arrows flying everywhere. Can anyone help to refresh my memory on this one?

    Thank you,

    M
    and New Zealand.

I loved the series Rome, it was the best, and it would be a crime not to watch it.

Gladiator and Sparatcus were okay..........not the greatest.

There are also some low-budget movies that never made it to theatres called Nero and Agustus. Theyre good at some parts........but i would stick to Rome if you want a really good, historically accurate drama about how life was in Rome at the time of Julius Caesar.

Not historically accurate (it melds Rome with modern day stuff), but Titus is a good movie. Adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, Anthony Hopkins plays Titus. A little on the violent side though. Just a little.

'I Claudius' is a pretty good movie, although it's rather old (70s or early 80s) and feels like a theatre play, no special effects here, but shows what court life was like at the time and gives a lot of historical information, it consists of a number of episodes and it's got a very good cast

    LOLlerpop!

Now that sounds like a plan

That movie must have been so inaccurate and filled with nudity for the purpose of nudity unto itself. Not like its a bad thing...

But it does sound like a schizophrenic romp reflecting the life of Caligula.

Attila is a must. It is one of my favorites. It gets a little weird, though.

The HBO series Rome is fantastic. If anyone in this forum hasn't seen it... they must.
