That is the nightmare situation. I have heard of cases where the wife watched "Big Brother" for hours and forced the husband to do the same. As a result his campaign suffered. This is in fact cruelty. Imagine the scenario:

Wife, loudly: "Are you watching or what?"

Husband: "whaaa... oh yes, I'm engrossed dear, totally engrossed... (...now where was I, oh yes camels. If I take the sinai next, charge camels uphill at the enemy's nubian spearmen, build a trader, and 80% farmland...)"

Wife: "HAHAHA... did you see that"?

Husband "ummm... oh yes! hahaha... (next I'd have to annex Ireland, but I haven't worked out how to get there yet...)

Wife: "Oh my god, they're going to... oh no they're not, oh HAHAHAHA! oh noooooo that was harsh! Hey are you watching?"

Husband: "(....hmmm camels, nizaris, if only....) Oh yea terrible... (now if I can retake Syria, charging his camels with my peasants should do it...)

Wife: "you're not watching are you?"

    Husband: "(...camels...) whaaat?

    Wife: "exactly..."

Husband: "Exactly what? (...desert archers, siege or asssault, and well now ghazis!)

    Wife: "Forget it ok?"

    Husband: "Forget what?"

Wife: "Nothing... JUST GO AND PLAY YOUR STUPID *BLEE - BLEE - BLEEP* GAME!"

    *DOOR SLAMS*

    Wife exits

    *sounds of TV upstairs*

    Husband: "(...camels...)"

    *lunges for the pc*
    And the solution? Simple.

Wife, loudly: "Are you watching or what?"

    Husband: "GAH!!"
    End of.

My lady did not like it at all when I would hole up in my computer room/office. It was upstairs, away from everything really, and she would always complain about not spending time together, she would always come in and bug me about random things, she would want to look up things online, etc. It got to be pretty impossible to get a few MTW turns in without harrassment. As a masterstroke, I got her a laptop for Christmas last year. Nothing too fancy (she just surfs the web and messes around with GIMP photo editing), but good enough to play some games as well. So naturally I installed MTW:VI (made sure to get a ATI vid card in it as well ) on it. She keeps it downstairs in the den. So now she can spend the evening watching shows off of TiVo, and I can be near her, playing through a VI campaign, on "her" laptop, without her complaining. As an added bonus, now I only have to go a few feet for another beer, instead of tromping up and down stairs. I've been able to play more MTW in the past year than I have in the previous 3.

Gaming while maintaining a relationship is just like TotalWar. Feints, flanking, diplomacy, and guile are all necessary skills. "This...is an age of darkness".

I think a possibly worse scenario:

Husband " ahh, house is quiet... time to grab the beer and Pie from the fridge, comfy cushion for the numb arse, and my battle plan; and off we go to the computer... whats that I hear, tap tap tap ??"

Door opens, slowly, and coming into sight is ... horror of horrors, Wifey sitting at the computer, playing ... SIMS !!!
Wife : " oh hello dear, I just got my charactor to clean the kitchen and make dinner, what a great game... oh, put the kettle on please I'm right in the middle of designing the bedroom!"

    Husband " NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo"

Is this your third account? Anyway, I must completely disagree with your statement. Having a lady is good. The trick is not to live together.

I have a Rule that keeps us both happy.
i play rome every day. thu i limit the time to the taking of one turn.
and days off i take five towns.
this keeps the wife faction high for me.
Works for me he does not like when i play .
but does not have a reason to complain since i limit myself to the play time.

No truer words have been spoken.

I had to limit my Rome playing time severely when it came out, I could only play a few turns in a row (and city maintenance was a pain). Combine this with the load/save bug, and it's pretty easy to see why I got turned off of RTW quickly.

I found that having a girlfriend and PC gaming to be rather incompatible. You can squeeze in some quality time if she has a hobby (that doesn't involve you).

Also, getting a DS was a great plan, now we can be together, I can play a game, and she can read a book or surf the web or watch a movie while still being with me ! A PSP or a laptop should also work. At last the true benefit of mobile gaming is revealed !

Put the PC in the shed and play RTW there.

This (and beer, poker, silence, etc,) is why men have sheds.

I keep mine in the basement near my workshop. Occasionally, I will get up from the game, go pick up a hammer and start beating on a piece of wood somewhere, just to let my wife know I'm still "working."
