    Default Technical issue

Hey guys, I've been a lurker for awhile and this is my first post.

I just recently re-bought Medieval after having not played for awhile. The version I bought was the PC Gamer "gold" version with the original game and VI on one DVD. When I started to install it, after a couple clicks it said that it detected another version of Medieval on my computer and that I need to uninstall it before I procede.

The problem is, I did uninstall it. There's no more Total War folder in my Program Files, and searching for "total war" and "war" didn't pick up anything relevent. Any ideas at how I should procede?

    Thanks in advance.

How did you uninstall the old Medieval installation?

I don't remember specifically, but I'm pretty sure I just went to the folder and clicked on the uninstall icon. Though I do remember that the "Total War" folder stuck around after that (with some mod stuff still left in it) and I just deleted that myself.

Ok that doesn't sound so bad then. Can you go to the control panel -> add/remove programs -> and check to see if Medieval is still in there?

-Edit: Oh and Welcome to the .org by the way!

Darn, once you mentioned that I was sure that would take care of it. But I looked through it and didn't see Total War, Medieval Total War, Creative Assemblies or anything relevent.

I shot an e-mail to the people at mastertronic (who I guess is the appropriate place to do so) about it but I'm not sure how long it'll be before I get a response.

    Thanks for the welcome.

I was looking around the registry (don't try this at home!) and was able to find the culprit: a Total War folder with nothing in it. :P

    Solved! Time to game!

    Good for you!

And by all means, do try this at home! Everyone should be informed enough to be able to open, check and modify their registry, lest they want all kinds of junk to collect on their hard disc and really slow down their comp over time.

For starters, I would recommend RegCleaner.

Yea, some installers simply look for the registry key and if it's there assume that the game is still installed. Being able to go in and clean up the mess is a big advantage. You can't rely on windows to simply "work" and do everything right, and automatically, because alot of the time it doesn't. It's not perfect and as Adrian II said, does accumulate alot of junk.

Just an addition - Always save a back-up copy of your registry before changing anything. It can be as simple as copying the file and renaming it .bak instead of .reg
