Thread: Problem with siege towers

    Default Problem with siege towers

When I play a siege and I try to get my men to climb a big siege tower (the ones that are completely covered in wood and have a small archer slit on top), they go to rush up the ramp but just keep milling around the bottom. The AI has the same problem when they are attacking my walls.

I can somewhat fix it by cancelling their orders and then teling them to run to the wall, or attack another unit, but it's still really annoying and time consuming because I have to do it several times before the whole unit is up.

What I play: Vanilla Rome 1.5. No BI, no Alexander.
    Help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have had the same problem. It may be the type of unit or what is happening elsewhere

Yeah, this happens to me sometimes, and for some reason it seems to happen to me with just a couple units - Principes are one of them I think, or perhaps Hastati. It's an annoying glitch, I don't think there is a way to fix it.

Yep, it's a well-documented and irritating bug. As I posted in another thread:

It's extremely annoying and hard to predict when it will happen, but apparently you can sometimes shake the affected unit out of its stupidity by repeatedly cancelling their orders (I think the hotkey is backspace) and then ordering them up onto the walls again until they get the idea.

CA apparently cannot be bothered to come up with a final patch for RTW to fix the stuff they messed up with the 1.5 patch (this, the Roman civil war bug, the messages bug), so the only solution is sadly to live with it and try to mitigate its effects by having plenty of alternative siege equipment.
There has been some work done on solving it, although reports differ about whether it works:

Quite right, it seems that the "men falling" bug has been replaced by the "got vertigo, don't want to go up the towers bug".
I find the only way to get round this is to move my men away from the towers and try again (while getting shot up), and this only works some of the time.
Personally I preferred the earlier bug as it was much rarer. Men refusing to climb the towers seems much more common.
    Shame on you CA.

For the first time yesterday I had men falling as they crossed from the seige toweer to the wall. This was BI.

I never had that in RTW V1.5...perhaps because I rarely needed seige towers in RTW.

Im currently trying a 'new' technique for seige towers.

Once I order them to attack the wall with the tower I give them no more orders. Once the tower is in position the troops form up. They stand there until they are exactly in a square formation..every last man. Once that is done they then move forward and enter the tower. Since I ve started doing this ive not had any occurance of troops refusing to enter the tower.

But I have had them fall off at the top. Connected? Too early to tell.

You've had 100% success with this so far? May try it myself.
But I've rarely seen the men falling bug, maybe it's just that it's not as blatantly jawdroppingly obvious as the refusing to enter the towers which I can spot from a long way away.
