Papewaio is back on the moderating team? Nice.

Once again, I must repeat two sentiments:

First, I seriously doubt the Backroom is that bad. I've been to far, far worse places with one or two moderators on the list.

    And second, Congratulations!

I don't know wether to congratulate him or give him my condolences. To be on the safe side I'll stick with the former rather than the latter.

    Congrats Pape!

Try Usenet proper, in the unmoderated groups. Serial cross-posters make flamewars particularly fertile and "interesting". Try dreaming up a topic that covers the following newsgroups:

    alt.politics
    alt.alien.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk
    alt.flame
    soc.history.what-if
    rec.sport.soccer
    soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm
    comp.lang.perl.misc

Alternatively, write whatever you want, then cross-post to as many groups as you can anyway, as per the Usenet tradition (until your account gets suspended for abuse). After enduring irritating little so-sos who initiate flamewars for amusement's sake and hop frequencies to evade killfiles, I am thankful for moderators. Cramps my style a little, but then I rarely resort to direct namecalling.

Ha! The Backroom is probably the most sedate and well moderated "backroom" I've ever been to. I'd link to the Cantina at xwlegacy but that forum is full of porn, abuse and spam. It got so bad at one point the regulars were actually conducting a sanctioned flamewar against posters who signed up just for that purpose.

The place is unmoderated. There was a whole topic called "brawl."

    What!? Sketchy.

Yes, compared to the rest of the net the .Org is very sedate and friendly.

EDIT: Back on the team hey, congrats.

Was this tailored for me? Sounds like fun, I'm in. Although, I kind of thought that this was what the mods liked...football and bondage, and drinking, I like that too.
Wasn't Pape taking a "vacation"? I hope that went well. Good to have you back, Pape.

I don't believe a word of it. Admit the truth, Pape -- you broke something, and now you're being punished with Backroom duty. There's no shame in fessing up.

Spmetla the Hawaiian, who is halfway between Australia (Papewaio) and America (Kukrikhan). Alternatively someone on the opposite coast from Kukri.

If we are going by timezones, won't one of Ser Clegane or Banquo's Ghost be surplus? Or are we Europeans really that naughty? How many African posters do we have, who might be covered by that duo?

From a timezone standpoint, an East Coast US mod would make the most sense. Not that I'm volunteering....

Considering the sheer volume of threads to cover, the fact that the mods also have real life issues and time constraints, along with the other reasons already given, you probably can't have too many.

Ha! The Backroom is probably the most sedate and well moderated "backroom" I've ever been to.
Which is testament to the individuals who volunteer their time and effort to keep it that way. It's not an easy job at all, and I hope all the members appreciate that.
