Help - Can't start a new campaign

Problem. The thing is, I've happily played away with Medieval Total War before on this same computer. A while back, I uninstalled and yesterday, I got the urge to reinstall. All went fine. I can have a quick battle and I can have a custom battle but I wanted to start a new campaign, something I'd done beforehand. Only, once it loads it take me to in-game menu. I click resume and it loads again but only goes on to load the in-game menu, meaning I can't actually play. I then went on to download the patch but that hasn't fixed the problem.

I wonder if this is a common problem and there is some easy way to resolve it or am I plain screwed and'll have to buy myself a new copy?

Do you mean that you can't start a new campaign, or that you can't resume a campaign you saved long ago, and loading the old save file doesn't work?

If it's the first case, that's really weird. In the second case, maybe that your file is corrupt or something?

I mean I can't start a new campaign. Sometimes it'll just take me to get desk top too which, after research, is told as a similar problem that can be fixed by changing settings on your graphics card. Not quite sure what I'm supposed to do and how I could do it though.

Did your graphic card changed since?

It hasn't. That's why I'm even more confused.

Might have to see if a reinstall does the trick.

Maybe not a new graphics card, but how about a newer video driver? There are known problems with newer nVidia drivers, one of the symptoms is exactly what you have described.

Charlie A, I would say the odds are good your problem is indeed related to your video drivers. I was one of those folks drone just mentioned that was having difficulties with them. Once I rolled back to an earlier set of drivers, I was able to run MTW without any problems.

Still strange that to my knowledge, I've not changed my video drivers since the last time I played Medieval Total War (a while back, in fairness.) If that is indeed the problem, is the only solution then to get myself a new video driver in which case I probably won't bother or is there something free and current I can do?

If you do need an older driver (I'm guessing at Nvidia card, as these are the awkward ones...) then legacy drivers are available for free download on the Nvidia website. My card's an Nvidia and I need different drivers installed for MTW/STW (old driver), and RTW (up-to-date driver) - so I don't bother with RTW any more

. But if your machine hasn't changed at all, then maybe the issue was with the uninstall/reinstall. I have heard of problems with registry entries hanging around, but that sort of problem usually prevents you re-installing it at all. So maybe as a "least cost approach", try a thorough uninstall again, check registry entries, manually delete any leftover MTW folders/files and then reinstall the game with the patch etc. Good luck!

With the new nVidia drivers, some people have had success by changing the anti-aliasing setting in the nVidia control panel to 2. I believe the problem is on how the newer drivers render the campaign map.
