They just become available after a certain date.

I think theres more to it than that. I've never seen them before. They appear to be a bugged too. When you click on them they say "Heavy Cavalry" and when taunting they have a funny british accent and say things like "For the King" and "England will be victorious!". Quite funny considering I'm the scottish![]()
No, the free company merc units and other mercs become available at certain dates in the campaign, and other merc units become unavailable. Their voice is bugged though.

They are available between 1338 and 1470.
See the descr_mercenaries.txt file in the campaign folder...
Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban
I found the German knights to be the worst deal of those late period mercs. Cost a lot to buy and upkeep and have stats that are worse than some of the early knights (only 8 attack...). Also have poor morale.
