If I understand correctly you are looking for the mods? Some modification given to the original games, and such?

For MTW I'de suggest the XL mod and BKB's mod. I've played the XL mod and it is pretty fun, but I never got a chance to play BKB's mod.
For RTW the two that stick out are the EB mod and Rome Total Realism.

For MTW - I recommend XL, BKB'S Super, P&M and Samurai Warlords
For RTW - I recommend EB, I've never played RTR so I can't comment on it.
