Thread: AI in sally battles

    Default AI in sally battles

Playing in vh\vh i laid siege with a weak militia army with gen to a strong milan city just to see what would happen. the battle odds were roughly 3:9 in thier favour. They sallied next turn of course but in the battle only sent half their army out at first which i sent running back then the rest was sent out and sent running back. All they had left then was the generals bodyguard which they never moved. Just him sitting behind the walls and me with no siege weapons. Porblem was i had timed battles off. which led to a highly annoying stalemate. I had to quit the battle manually even though it was a crushing victory tacticly. Is this a bug? What would have happend with timed battles? It seems "no timed battles" must be turned off in case of sally, kind pointless option to have then. Anyone have this happen?

Always have timer on since you rarely run out of time, but you do not get to take the city if the enemy sallies and routs, but still has units that haven't routed. You must rout all enemy units at one point during the sally or it wont work.

I never have the timer on as its too restricting especially during seiges.

Personally, I would just have quit the battle and considered it a morale victory. then marched back and renewed the seige against a much weaker garrison.

Ideally, what I would like is a system where a battle lasts all day and night and is then suspended for another campaign turn. That would enable armies to be withdrawn or reinforced if no result was acheived, but thats obviously not going to happen in this game.

I had the same issue several times and all you can do really is wait for a patch...

What I noticed though when the enemy sallied when I had AI reinforcements was that if I manually routed most my units save 1 or 2, the AI would start moving again. Once I even had to rout all my units to get that to happen.

Either way, it should really be a victory, so I suppose next time you siege the place, just use general and 1 infantry and when you assault or they sally, auto resolve. But before pressing auto resolve, type "auto_win attacker" or defender depending on who you are.

No surely if the enemy are sallying and you chew most of them up but can't finish the last off because they won't leave the city and your not capable of going in abfter them, then the battle should end in a draw and the situation be left with you beseiging the city.

You certainly haven't won. To win you would have to be in a position to go into the city and finish them off.
