Just recently noticed that my star general, a successful crusader, with a great list of stats and traits had started losing command stars. I scrolled down his triat list to find he'd become utterly deranged. Looking through my family tree it seems that in fact most of family have picked up "the Mad" after their name, and since then every time I think I'm building up a decent general I find that he becomes a loon.
One theory I had about why this was so was the culture of assasination in this campaign. Another surprise looking through the family tree was how many had been killed this way, all without me noticing. The hungarians and the Empire in particular have a lot of agents around my cities. I'm wondering if the traits "paranoid" and "morbidly mortal" result from failed assassination attempts and can progress to all out madness. Although there wouldn't be much I could do about it at this point, except press on and finish off Hungary and the HRE, but that's not really an option as I'm also at war with almost everyone else. (This always seems to happen a playing as Venice.)
I also really hope that madness inot hereditary in this game. Otherwise I'm really doomed, and I'll have to have a cull by putting half my family in a little boat and sending that out to meet the Hungarian navy.
