Latest XP updates?

Well, I just installed the latest Win XP updates on 2 different copies of XP(same hardware though) and now I get an error message on startup saying that some dll moved another dll out of some system reserved memory, also mentioning another dll etc pp. One of the files mentioned is hhctrl.ocx which seems to be related to Windows help about the others I have no idea, can't even remember their names now.
Since I couldn't find anything about that problem I guess I'm about the only one who gets it and that's why I'd like to know the names of the latest updates so I can try to delete them and see if that helps(I just installed them all at once so the installation dates are all the same).
Meanwhile, I'm going to install Vista, hoping that this time my harddrive will survive the process of installing a second Windows.

I got same too.

A quick bit of googling shows MS made a stuff up.
RTHDCPL.EXE is the Realtek HD Audio driver & one of the new MS updates broke it so they have released an update to fix it KB 935448

SYMPTOMS
When you start a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not start. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
Rthdcpl.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.
This problem occurs when the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel (Rthdcpl.exe) by Realtek Semiconductor Corporation is installed.

CAUSE
This problem may occur after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008). The Hhctrl.ocx file that is included in security update 928843 and the User32.dll file that is included in security update 925902 have conflicting base addresses. This problem occurs if the program loads the Hhctrl.ocx file before it loads the User32.dll file.

Interesting, so it was a driver update. Do you normally let Msoft do those for you? I'm kind of paranoid, so I always go to the manufacturer's site and grab drivers from the source. Looks as though my excessive caution wasn't.

It actually wasn't, it was just that the driver and one of the dlls M$ apparently changed wanted to use the same memory and one just kicked the other out, I usually never upgrade sound drivers unless I come across some problem. And the last time Windows upgraded my joystick driver, the new driver would always crash in a very bad way whenever I attempted to calibrate.

So, no I don't let it upgrade my drivers, I usually get them from the manufacturer as well, I don't even trust most third party sites like treiberdownloads.de or so except if I'm very desperate.

Is this the .ANI exploit update? I had heard that the fix caused some problems, I'm holding off until they get a better patch.

Anyone ever have Automatic updates go bad and cause svchost.exe crashes?

I'd read some about it before, but never experienced it until yesterday. My company-issued laptop is the only PC I have with auto updates enabled and yesterday it started getting errors about svchost.exe crashing. My knee-jerk reaction was, 'uh-oh, virus', especially since I had just got back from a road-trip (damn hotel wireless APs). But, I updated my AV, did a full scan and did a Trend Housecall full scan- all came up empty. After some googling, I just turned off auto updates and restarted- no more errors.

I later found and applied a MS hotfix I found in their knowledgebase that sounded like it may fix the issue, but I decided to leave auto updates off anyhow.

Apparently so, I didn't really pay too much attention to what it was that I updated.

This thing freaked the hell out of me, my PC is stable & well protected, I was like "WTH, virus?! On MY PC

So is it actually breaking the internet, can I google the error?
Yes internet works but just a bunch of stuff about how yes, rthdcpl.exe is the Realtek control panel & some worms hijack it!
Then tried the exact error message & found the MS KB article, "Phew, not my booboo, ooh others are gonna get that"
The .org was 2nd stop with URL in clipbook.

Great, thanks for this thread. I had to same, only in my Dutch version it looked like User32.dll has stopped working, so I googled that and it said:
if this doesn't work anymore your computer doesn't work anymore.

So I restored the last settings. But now I should be able to fix it
