    Cool Comparative Map

    This is kinda neat, from the Strange Maps blog, a comparative map of the U.S., where the names have been replaced by nations with equivalent G.D.P.

    I hope this isn't terminally geeky.

    I note that we in the land of cheddar have a G.D.P. similar to South Africa. And we don't even have gold or diamond mines! Take that, Johannesburg!

    Nevada = Ireland.

    Makes sense, since both our economies are largely dependent on gambling.

    The big weird one for me is Tennessee = Saudi Arabia. That doesn't seem ... possible. Then again, from what I've heard, getting realistic numbers from Saudi is almost impossible, so maybe their G.D.P. is underreported? I mean, nothing against TN, but they aren't generating the same kind of wealth as the biggest oil source in the world. I don't think.

    Anybody have some insight to shed on this?

    California = France, too funny.

    West Va = Algeria, also seems about right. :banjo:

    Don't forget, this is Gross Domestic Product, not Gross National Product. For Saudi Arabia, oil/gas extracted/refined by foreign companies wouldn't count (except for taxes/rights payments).

    According to wikipedia, Tennessee's GDP was $226,502 billion, and according to the CIA world factbook, the GDP of Saudi Arabia is $366.2 billion (2006 est.).

    The map is totally wrong. "Portugal" is more than 5 times larger than "Greece" but in reality Greece has a $24000 GDP/capita and Portugal has a $18000GDP/capita with practically equal populations. Also, Russia has 12 times the GDP (PPP) of Singapoore.

    Edit...nevermind...i thought it was GDP-to-size match.

    Edit 2...the map in the post above is a bit old. Chinese GDP has reached $3trillion (and 10tril PPP :O)

    The numbers behind your map can be found here.

    They put Saudi Arabia at GDP $286 billion. Wiki (IMF and World Bank) puts it a bit higher, but a quick comparison showed they do so for most countries. GDP is useful, but has it's problems. I really don't know the ins-and-outs of the Saudi economy though.

    Wiki does have lower numbers for individual (US) states. Gross State Products. Your map overestimates US numbers and underestimates the numbers for the rest of the world. For example, $1.7 million for Cali, versus $2.2 for France (or $2.3 for the UK). But that really shouldn't detract from the fun. The differences are not that great (20/25%).

    It's a great map that really conveys America's economic preponderance well.

    I'm terminally geeky enough to be utterly fascinated by this sort of map. Let me share another one, size = GDP:

    Louis map is interesting, although have they done the converting linear differences to area overrepresentation thing ? (It looks like it from the legend)

    GDP per capita would be even more interesting.

    Wots that mean?

    The legend of the map reads 'Every country is represented by an area proportional to the importance of his GNP'. But looking at the squares again, they look not proportional. Which is probably what you mean. Map:

    Hmm, Penssylvania?

    This seems to be a really old map, early 90'ties I'd say. At the moment Russia's economy is substantially larger than that of New Jersey
