Default New ads on this website contain audio content- very irritating!

Is there a way to disable the audio? I click on the X button but it just leads to the ad's link.

I could turn the audio off on my PC, but what if I am listening to music?

I realize this is not on-topic, but it directly relates to this forum because that is where I am experiencing the ad.

It's not just audio, which is irritating enough, but it is INANE audio:

"Come see superbad, the best movie ever" EVERY time I move around the website. My complaint should be obvious.

I understand the site needs money to operate, but PLEASE no audio ads! You could even put them at the top of the screen so I would have to scroll down to see the website content. That would be less annoying.

I apologize to any moderators if this particular question should be moved to a backroom discussion page; I only posted it here because it relates to my experience with the Citadel page. It is certainly not my intent to spam post, and I felt this was relevant enough to post here.

Yes, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel and go to sound (Or something that resides sound in some way.)

I'm not sure what you're driving at witht the Start/Settings/Control Panel... went there and I can't find a way to disable the ad audio without turning off ALL my audio. Further help would be appreciated!

It's the site for the movie "Superbad"...

I am SO not going to go see this movie. The ad is WAY too annoying.

Besides turning down the speakers, I don't think their is a way. What I was referring too BTW is go to the start menu, then click on Settings from what you see after clicking on Start and then so on and so on.

Hell, I have Windows Vista so I can't even help you through Internet Explorer because I have an "Updated" version apparently.

Thanks Budwise. I have windows XP and I don't have "settings" from my start menu, but I can get to Audio from the control panel, and from what I have seen, nothing there is useful.

As an aside, I'm sorry you have Windows Vista. My deepest sympathies. Kidding aside, I heard it was very annoying.

EDIT: Is it only me that's hearing these ads? Am I losing my mind?

I think it is just you, I went to the superbad site and didn't hear anything. But as a whole, I had to get Vista because I got a 320gb hard drive and needed it to work when my master HD failed that was 100gb. I could not partition my 320gb drive or even format it after I did partition it with secondary partitioning software.

Oh no, Budwise. No audio content there, I meant here in the Citadel forum.

Down at the very bottom of our screen here there are ads, but until just now they never had audio content to disturb my forum enjoyment.

It's definitley on this website, Forums totalwar org.

    Hi askthepizzaguy,
I'm sorry, but the only possible way of hiding the ads is by downloading the browser Firefox and then one of it's extensions AdBlock+. Sadly, the admins have no control over the ads - they belong to the hosts who use them to pay for the upkeep required to host the site for free. The staff can complain, but may or may not be heard by the advertisement directors. I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Yes, ATPG, I hear it too. And it's not playing just once. It's popping up periodically. Annoying.

Really, you have ads? Here? I don't. Although I just turned up my volume and heard something talking but now it disappeared. WTH. Anyways an ad blocker + Spybot S&D to fix that problem.

    --------------

WTF, I hear it now. Hold on, I can figure out how to stop it but I don't have time now. Try an ad blocker. Thanks Pizzaguy for screwing it up for me by jinking me.

If you complain about it being irritating, then I'm sure that the company that puts them there (Ugo is it) will possibly take it into account and realise it's not working.

Otherwise use Firefox with Adblock. Or maybe try Safari for Windows (I don't get sounds when using it, but I'm not 100% sure that will work so probably best to use Firefox).

I haven't heard any annoying sounds. I'm using Opera and Vista.
And I can think of many ways to block this:

    1. the Kerio firewall and I would guess other firewalls allow to block ads, however, you may need to buy them(in the case of Kerio you do, only the firewall itself is free)

    2. like others said, get Firefox and adblock

    3. Opera allows me to block certain content on webpages

    4. Opera also allows me to block sounds on this website

    5. Vista allows you to block sound per application, which means I could just disable sound for the browser(well, you'd have to get Vista....).

    6. there are probably other ways like special adblocker programs though I don't like having my PC cluttered with many annoying third party programs

So if you're using Win XP with IE and have no good Firewall, it's about time to upgrade something, it's the worst possible combination anyway(mostly because of IE ).

    Hello askthepizzaguy,

The ads are managed by Telefragged (now renamed Atomicgamer) and UGO. The content changes from time to time, without us knowing what it will be. There isn't much we can do apart from filing complaints.

I would appreciate any complaints filed about the superbad ad. I've seen quite a few ads, we all have, but that one was particularly revolting.

You could turn the audio off on the ad, but every time I navigated through the forum, it would reappear with full audio. Click a link, reply to post, refresh the screen, on and on for about twenty minutes straight.

I thank all that is right and good with the world that the ad has stopped, for now. I also thank you, TosaInu, for noting our concerns and responding. I can appreciate your position on this issue.

When making complaints to Telefragged/AtomicGamer, I wonder if it would help if you mentioned the Firefox/Adblock suggestions that always come up in these discussions. I don't think that having members blocking ads is in the host's best interest, but essentially that is what annoying ads like this force us to do. And while an annoying ad runs for a short while, the chances of someone installing and running the Firefox/Adblock combo, and then turning ads back on are slim.

I don't mind supporting the host with ad hits (not clicks though ), but if I get inundated with annoying Flash and noise, I'm going to block it and suggest very loudly to others that they do the same.

Both CBR and I noticed these very annoying repetitive sound files playing from the main board. I only got them when coming to the main forum page. CBR was getting them in subforums as well.

I have a hardware mute button on my laptop, so I just mute it, but really, this is a serious invasion of user ear-space. It might be worth a complaint to the hosting support group, considering we have a few who've noticed it, which implies there are others that just haven't spoken up yet.

Just now heard the "SuperBad" sound ad. Strangely, that's not the banner displayed (that is for 'Chili's', a local restaurant chain), so the soundclip is apparently not directly related to the visual ad.

"SuperBad" follows every move I make on the forum.

Using IE6, of course. Guess I'll switch to FahrFoxy. :)

It's not just Chili's. I've seen it for some cellphone ad as well as the "SuperBad" ad itself.

This may be my imagination, but I only seem to get it at certain times a day. The evening/night EST generally. That might explain why Andres and Bijo (both are Euros, I believe) don't have problems.
