Vista and Winrar

When I want to extract a .rar file with Winrar, the error-box appears and repeatedly says. access denied. The file is not corrupted, as I redownloaded it twice. Zip files work for some reason. I assume this has to do with windows vista, as I can easily unpack the file on my old pc with windows 2000. I'm already logged in as administrator. Is there a way to fix this problem?

Don't have Vista, so I can't really help out that much. Have you tried using 7-zip instead of WinRAR to uncompress the file? Maybe the WinRAR client isn't working properly on Vista.

It's so you can't potentionally open potentially pirated files.

I'd say the file was badly compressed if you didn't say you can unpack it on the other OS. Well, did you disable UAC? I could imagine that causing problems for example if the file isn't where you see it. If you copied it into some program folder it's not really there even though Vista shows it to be there. If Vista does the same to WinRAR, it's no wonder that it cannot unpack the file since it will look for the file in the wrong directory.

I don't know whether that is the case but if it is, there should be two ways to circumvent this:
1. Turn off UAC
2. Don't download files into any folder in C:\program files

If that isn't it, I have no idea, maybe reinstall WinRAR or something, it should work in Vista since it works for me.

In addition to drone's suggestion, winace also processes rar files.
Just an observation, though: the fact that you downloaded the file twice means nothing; if the original was corrupt, then you will get a corrupt file regardless of how many times you download it, obviously. But since you can unrar it on a different machine, you're right, the file is okay. I was just pointing out a potential flaw in the reasoning.
However, judging from the error message, it's more likely that there's some problem with the rights (disclaimer: don't have vista), like Husar suggested.
