Thread: Certain faction-unique units.

    Default Certain faction-unique units.

Can you train Scots Guard in an ordinary French campaign, like longbowmen and Billmen in the English campaign? Or are they like English armored Sergeants which were never made available?

Scots Guard can be trained in any city with huge stone walls. The only unit that I know of which France has in its roster but cannot train in a campaign is the dismounted French archer unit (the mounted ones are available).

Sweet, they loog like brilliant defenders. How good are they in practice?

    And are Voulgiers any good?

Scots are some of the best archers / dual purpose units. They are very heavy armored and have a nice missile and mêlée attack.

Just about as useful as halberd militia, which is to say fairly useless. Use them similarly as pikes, but instead of swords as secondary weapons, they use a secondary voulge (which looks the same as their primary but has lower attack) with slow halberd animation.
Their morale is quite poor too and they are very vulnerable to attacks in 1.2 (they were quite OK before the shield fix).

Also, they move very slowly and tire very quickly. Overall, I wouldn't bother with them at all.

voulgiers are a whole lot better than the poor suckers in halberd militia. just going to Warlore for the stats .... here you are.

halberd militia and voulge militia seem to have precisely the same stats for morale formation and weapon. but voulge militia start off withan "armour save" of 5 whereas halberd militia get none. futhermore the VM armour is up-gradable by an xtra level on that of HM. This makes a huge difference to battlefield performance, because these slow units are most vulnerable to missiles and losing men will bring on a morale check.

voulgiers, the professional ones, are what halberdiers should be like. despite their much lower stats they seem to perform just as well as the obudshaer suicide-batchelors. you can use their tightly-packed phalncks formation to hold off cavalry, pin the centre, or best of all to absorb cannon-shot! good luck out there. happy yule to you and yours.

    Thats not quite correct.
Voulge Militia start with armor level 2, upgradable to silver 4.
Halberd militia start with armor level 0, upgradable to gold 3.
    Voulge: 5/6
    Halberd: 5/1
    Post upgrade:
    Voulge: 5/8
    Halberd: 5/7

So the difference in armour is really 1 point and they are otherwise exactly the same. Note that also Voulge Militia are 90 florins more expensive per unit, so overall they are equal in cost-benefit.

Voulgiers are 7/8, upgradable to 7/10. Cavalry can charge them head-on with minimal losses while breaking their formation and massacring them due to their low defense. Besides, they are very slow and exhaust quickly as I noted earlier, so not a good choice of unit if you can replace them with footknights (which are only 60 more expensive and have 75 more upkeep but more than double their stats).

alas! halberds ain't what they used to be. its as my old man says, you just can't get the halberdiers nowadays. i yearn for the days of mtw, the days of yore, when they were to an attacker what a large helping of xmas pudding is to my intestines. alackaday, alackaday! that this should ever be. there is no choice for a devoted halberd lieutenant but to play the danes.

It truly puzzles me how the whole concept could have gone down the pipe like that. Started off with Naginata in STW, which were an awesome holding unit, continued as halberdiers in MTW who ,again, although painfully slow could hold any gate/bridge under hail of arrows. And look at them now! Bloody shame... halberd militia, voulgiers, billmen - they all suck! I'm a big cavalry fan, but even as such I must admit there is something deeply troubling about being able to rip through a double line of billmen with a bodyguard unit. Bloody shame...
