GOING OUT: The World's best venues

Just realised we don't have a thread which details the best places to go in all different parts of the world. Since we're quite an international bunch I reckon we could give each other a lot of good places to go out, clubs, bars, restaurants, theatre etc.

I guess I should start, I'll start with one in London, great place if you like Indian food with a decent English touch: The Bombay Brasserie

Going out as in restaurant? Can't help you there too much though.
But I can recommend the following for clubbing:

Saint Tropez.

The best partying happens in Saint Tropez. Save some money and go there. You'll have a blast. Hopefully I'm going there in the summer.

I'll contribute:
If in Dublin, there's a great and relatively cheap place called SaBa - it's thai and southeast asian food. Great choice, inexpensive, and very good service. I do recommend booking in advance or planning on getting plastered at the bar while you're waiting, because their cocktails are also excellent.


I am ashamed to admit I forget the names of restaurants with ridiculous ease, even if I remember the location physically....

In Madrid, however, there is an argentinian asador just of the Isabel II square, opposite the Teatro Real. If you like meat, that's your spot. Not cheap though, although delicious. Hmmmmm ribs...

One of the best known cafes in Madrid - Cafe de las Letras - IIRC, on Calle Alcalá, between the Paseo del Prado and Sol, again, expensive, but in a fantastically restored old building that keeps cool in the summer, with good service, and a good beer selection and great views over the scorching hot street during the summer. Great place for a coffee and newspaper read, or to sit down with a book and a beer during the hot hours.

Again, in Dublin, Cruzzo, in Malahide, is renown in Ireland, but what is less known is their wonderful Sunday brunches. On the pricey side, but with a view of the Marina (hot waitresses), great food, and usually not uncomfortably busy.

And if you are in Madrid during the summer, the Teatro Real has a summer program of activities with some great opera. I love the city to the point that I'm just happy bumming around from spot to spot, stopping for a beer when i get tired or too hot... Plenty of nightclubs for those so inclined though. Around Arenal in the old city, and many others.

I remember many more, but not with that kind of detail. Enjoy!

What we call the thirtheenth in the dozen, soooooo many places like it. Best partying, East-Berlin and just about everything Barcelona.

More specific, Amsterdam on queensday, it's crazy but you have to see it once, can hardly move unless you go by boat.

Lanzarotte, Pueto del Carmen - where I sometimes go for holidays, there a fairly large chain of restaurants - "Lani's". It's a fairly middle class set of family sit down dinner locations.

The foods of equally high quality in each one, but the staff in the newer "Grill" next to the "Indian" and the one with the light blue glassy mosaic on the floor has especially friendly staff and you always get a warm welcome. At some of the others, although the staff are ok, they are a little cold and emotionless at times and never engage in "small talk".

"La Ola", another one of Lani's restaurants, also provides a fairly freindly environment and, being the newest, also has a few more artistic features. As before, the food is undeabatably excellent.

"Cafe La Ola", which is another member of the chain, is drastically different to the rest. It's got an Indian/Thai theme. I've never been inside, but I hear it has post-dinner entertainment and a few snazzy decorative features. Beyond that I'm not too sure, although I'm going after Easter, so should be able to give a better review.

Excellent! Keep it going gents. Here's one in Paris, very well known of course. It's good but pricey. The Blue Elephant Paris. It's the kind of venue to go for a special date, birthdays, and other events. It's not an everyday eating joint.

One of my favourite restaurants outside of Germany, this was started by a German owner who was a good friend, and who then sold it to someone else. When I went back, I was glad they kept similar food and atmosphere.

The restaurant below Gran Hotel Costa Rica is also excellent.

Cool restaurant where I live, the food isn't the greatest, but the good news is that you can reserve the tower for two, and it doesn't cost you extra just reserve 1 week ahead to be sure it's available. Perfect if you have the bug.

As I don't pretend to know much about clubbing, as it is not really my sort of thing, I can pretty much only recommend good restaurants around Europe and the odd bar.

London:

The West End Kitchen

Extraordinarily good value for money restaurant on Panton Street just off the Haymarket. The food is very nice and homely, with great British dishes like Shepherd's Pie, Gammon steak and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard, all for very reasonable prices.
Usually very busy, it is a very good place refuel when going round the west end or before going to the theatre (if you can't really afford the place below). However, the atmosphere isn't great, the decor being quite spartan, and the seats are quite small and it can be a bit of a squeeze.
About £15 for a three course dinner with wine.

Sarastro's

A beautifully decorated place on Drury Lane just behind the Theatre Royal, with an eclectic and somewhat over-the-top mix of Venetian, Byzantine, Gothic and Baroque styles (with the emphasis being on gilt, gilt and more gilt) and you can have dinner in your very own opera box. There are also weekly opera shows as I seem to recall. The food, a sort of Turco-Italo-Greek mix, isn't half bad either, and not all that expensive.
About £25-30 for three courses with wine.

The Sandwich Bar on Hanson Street

I'm sorry that I'm not sure what it's real name is, but this is the most capital to place to have a snack on the go when in that neck of the woods of the metropolis (i.e. Fitzrovia). The place is tiny, with space for about five people in front of the counter and two two-seater tables outside, but the snacks (and thus mainly the sandwiches) to be found are simply scrumptious. You can choose not only from the plethora of fillings (salt beef, salami, sausage, egg mayonaise, smoked salmon, cheddar cheese, stilton, etc. as well as the many accompanyments like onion, tomato, mustard, cress, chives...) but also from the huge range of differently flavoured baps, buns, baguettes, bagels, rolls and sandwich breads. Last time I was there in September, I had mouth-watering scrambled egg, smoked salmon and onion bagel smothered in salt, pepper and melted butter for just £2. Sadly, I did notice then that the charming who were running the shop had a "For Sale" sign up, so I do hope that if it has changed hands it hasn't become some awful kebab place.

Anybody on the board live in Atlanta? The Masquerade was a club very similar to the 9:30 here, lots of alternative/punk/metal bands along with clubbing. I wonder if that place is still going.
