Checked some old threads and found that with vista, you need to click/enable the compatibility file option in your toolbar to make it display all files.

I'm not really sure what the problem is here - all my RTW games are fine, with preference files fully accessible.

No read only option is NEVER a problem unless you modify game files. But as far as the pref file goes, Im not sure. I hope to have gold soon, so Ill see then. Until then I dont know what the problem would be. Ill mess around and see if I can digg up some info on this problem.
Anyways, hope you are able to enjoy M2TW. Is a really fun game.
