Some of the guys on the National Geographic Channel ads should be banished from speaking it then. Honestly, I do believe in beauty in every language; they just should be spoken right.

I have a question about Dutch, and I figured I'd come here, since it's where the Dutch live.

What sound do the letters "uy" make when written like that? Like in 'fluyt' or 'ruyter', for example.

    Hi everybody . . .

    Dang . . .

I guess it's kind of boring living in America when there's a speak your own language thread.

Anyway, for anyone who was wondering, this is what English looks like, at least the American version. If you'd like a translation you'll probably have to do it because my German and Latin are still pretty weak and that's all I got.

The word 'fluyt' does not exist, I think. ruyter perhaps, but I'm not sure either.

I doubt there's any way to explain this without sound. the sound does not exist in english, I think.

The fluyt is a ship of Dutch design, 16th Century, I think. I'd never seen "ruyter" before playing Age of Empires III, but it's a pistol-armed cavalry unit.

I speak also German and French. Feel free to make references to these languages to explain the phonetics.

that explains all. I already thought it was old Dutch. the combination 'uy' is not longer used in here. we use 'ui' for that now. in old Dutch they used 'uy' so that's what you see in AOEIII. (I already was wondering where you found those words )

I speak also German and French. Feel free to make references to these languages to explain the phonetics.
good idea! I do as well... hmmmmmmmmm. In german...... can't think of any I think they don't use it there as well. perhaps Frech........ I don't think so as well

strange. seems like we only have that 'tone' in here. I know what it should be in Greek in Latin, but if you don't know these I think I cannot help

I'm sure that this is correct for Latin. for Greek not 100%:

the 'eu' in 'Zeus' is the same as 'uy' in old dutch (Zeus was the 'boss' of all greek/latin gods) - I mean, when you are speaking latin or greek and say 'Zeus', this will be the same as 'uy'. of course not when you're talking English and say Zeus.

    does that help?

It helps a little, but I don't know how to pronounce 'Zeus' in ancient Greek if it's not "ZAY-us" or "ZOO-s"...

Well, it doesn't sound like that, anyway.... guess you've got to hear to know what it sounds like (pity, but 'ui' is a pretty common Dutch sound).

    It sounds like Zuys
Wheel down, wheel down to southward! Oh, Gooverooska, go!
    And tell the Deep-Sea Viceroys the story of our woe;
Ere, empty as the shark's egg the tempest flings ashore,

Still trying to get it right aren't you, or have you finally got some kind of idea of how to pronounce it ?

Americans will find it very hard to make this sound, as you might have noticed by now
