Prinz Henry: I am declaring the Fifth Diet open for the proposal of edicts and the submission of election manifestoes for candidates for the post of Chancellor. The deadline is typically three days (in this case, 8am Saturday UK time), although I have to confirm this with my father.

    Fifth elector of Swabia

I propose following edicts my fellow comrades in arms:

5.1 We should seek allies in England, Scotland and Russia. This will force our enemies to a two front war if they dare attack us or our ally, especially as we currently do not share borders with these nations. At the same time, the alliances should only be decided if they shall pay us tribute for it, for we are the more superior nation. (aim for barely accepted)

5.2 We need to move out all superfluous troops out from the heartland and leave just enough there to keep public order. These troops should be used to reinforce our borders and fronts.

    5.3 The elimination of Milan

5.4 Driving Venice back to at least Ragusa, leaving them with this region and Iraklion at the most

5.5 Attempt to make the Poles our vassals (without spending more than map info and 5000 florins)

5.6 Attempt to make Milan our vassals (without spending more than map info and 5000 florins)

5.7 The training of additional clergy to root out heresy and allow more of our cardinals into the college.

5.8 Training of at least 2 good assassins to take care of high profile political targets

    The 6th Elector of Bavaria:

Stands up, still deeply engaged in the intelegence report he had in his hand, and scattered across half his desk, he wanted to read that report, dated as it was, all night, anything to keep from speaking, but it was his turn to speak. This was going to be his first time speaking in the Diet, adressing nobility, many he only knew from royal proclemations(sp) announcing the glorious victories they have won for the Riech. He was Nervous, and is showed, 'You know you've done your homework' he told himself, 'You'll be fine.' And with that he started.*

Honourable Swabian elector, I must say that is an expensive set of edicts you have proposed, and 5.3 and 5.6 are in conflict with each other.

But there is some merit there, 5.1 for example, England and Russia would both valuable allies but I caution that English relations should take priority over Scottish interests, and forcing payment upon these newfound friends would surely result in failed negotiations (sp).

Proposed edict 5.2 flies directly in the face of Otto von Kassel's call for an adjustment of our tax policy. Both sides of the arguement posses merit, and perhaps then cities should only be garrisoned with free troops, and castles only with peasents?

I love the Idea behind edict 5.3, but Venice has no papal protection, Milan does...

I second 5.4, and I second 5.7. We eill need aditional Clergy as we approach the Orthodox and Hertic lands of the east and north.

5.5 and 5.6 are preposterous, 5000 Florins? for a bunch of polish and milanese slaves? I think not.

as for 5.8, well...I'm sure some supprt could be found if Pope Gregory was one of those, how did you put it? "high profile political targets", especially if we had Cardinals in place to realign the politics of the papcy.

Dietrich Von Saxony, I like the flexibility of 5.9 and the logic of 5.10, I second edict 5.9 and 5.10.

At this time I will wait to propose edicts till the latest intelegence is in.

*The young Bavarian elector sits down, looking obviously relieved, he takes a long drink of his ale and waits for a response.*

Prinz Henry: Now that we have the Chancellor's final report, I am re-opening the Fifth Diet. Edicts proposed for this session still stand, and I will also count any seconding that has been done so far.

I await my father's confirmation, but I am proposing we debate for three days (until Saturday 8am) but then extend the voting period to 48 hours to accommodate my father and the ex-Chancellor.

Sigismund der Brav stands up and faces the Diet:

Mein electors, ever since I was born I have wanted to fight the French. They are noble in battle, but their kings are tyrannts. They have supressed the dignity of every Frank and now seek to push Swabians under their yoke. I urge you to send me against them with all haste.

    I propose Edict 5.11:

Sigismund der Brav is to be sent against the French armies invading Burgundy. After that he shall proceed to conquer France until a Papal warning is given. Sigismund alone shall be sent against the French, as the other generals are needed in Italy and Poland.

I don't intend to steal glory, but I have the best interests of the Reich at heart.

At any moment, the Danes could turn against us. In that case, the Franconians would be unable to assist Swabia.

As for Swabia itself, Prinz Henry could organise the defence while I take the fight to the enemy.

    Sigismund resumes his seat.

    Dietrich Von Saxony:

"I thank Count Sigismund for his services to the Reich as the Chancellor and for reporting us about the latest developments. While it seems that the situation in the South is turning more favourable to us. I cant see that the latest report chances anything in the North East,so my suggestions for Edicts 5.9 and 5.10 will stand. So now that Sigismund has officially stepped down, who will run for the Chancellor? I have personally decided that i cant regrettably commit myself for that position and think it will be wiser for me to commit my energy on defeating the Poles."

Dietrich sits down and waits for the others to address the Diet.

Prinz Henry: The Chancellor is to be congratulated on leading us through such... interesting ... times. His term in office will be remembered for driving the Milanese from mainland Europe and suckering the Venetians into excommunicating themselves.

However, I find myself in some disagreement with his proposed response to the French incursions (OOC: are we at war yet?). I had attempted to discuss this in private amongst fellow Swabians, but it properly concerns all Germans and as the Chancellor has already proposed one response in 5.11, I believe I should also proffer my alternative for consideration.

I salute Sigismund for his eagerness to come to grips with French - such bravery is what we have come to expect from him. However, I wonder if the Diet would consider an alternative, more elliptical response to the French? Specifically, I propose that we adopt the same maneouvre with them as we followed successfully with Venice at the last mid-term. That is to say, I propose:

Edict 5.12: In view of the French threat, all Swabian generals are to return to defend the western front against France. The Empire is to adopt a defensive posture in the west in an attempt to lead to the excommunication of France. When France is excommunicated, the posture is to switch to an offensive one - aiming at Rheims and then Paris.

In the long run, I believe my edict will lead to more progress being made against France than if we simply run at them bull headed. The latter approach will surely lead to a Papal warning after at best one or two French settlements have fallen. By contrast, an initial defensive stance may allow us to conquer with impunity in the future.

"While i admire the chivalry and bravery, that Count der Stoltze shows with his plan and im sure that he is only thinking of the best of the Reich. I must express that Prinz Henry is more in the same line of thinking as i am. Therefore i will second Edict 5.12."

Dietrich sits back on his seat taking another sip from his glass of red wine.

Prinz Henry: In the light of new knowledge - specifically of the Milanese excommunication - I am revising Edict 5.12 so that it does not mandate the recall of all Swabian generals.

Edict 5.12 (revised): The Empire is to adopt a defensive posture in the west in an attempt to lead to the excommunication of France. When France is excommunicated, the posture is to switch to an offensive one - aiming at Rheims and then Paris.

Duke of Franconia stands up and starts reading from a scroll:

"Mein Kaiser,Prinz,Dukes and fellow Electors. Since the unfortunate War with Poland touches Franconia the most. It is my duty as Duke of Franconia to present you with the following:

Edict 5.9 Reich will start offensive against Poland by taking Magdeburg and continuing the offensive untill either Poland sues for peace or Papal warning of excommunication is given.

This edict would allow us to have an flexible strategy that we could chance depending on the situation on the front.
Another matter i have been thinking would be:

Edict 5.10 Holy Roman Empire suggests an alliance to Hungary.

As Hungary is situated between our enemies Poland and Venice.By securing an alliance we should be able to eliminate a possible threat to our flank, while our forces are concentrated against the Polish and Venetians.

Dietrich Von Saxony takes his place among the Franconians

Prinz Henry: Apologies, Electors, I must suspend this session of the Diet. The Chancellor has indicated that there have been surprising developments. We need to wait to learn what they are.
