    Greece Info.

In the aftermath of WWI, Greece fought a bloody and eventually unsuccessful war against Turkish nationalists led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Greco-Turkish War - 1919-1922) which resulted in a massive population exchange between the two countries according to the Treaty of Lausanne.Political instability and successive coup d'etat s marked the following period which was also stirred by the massive task of incorporating the 1,5 million refugees from the Asia Minor to Greek society .In 28 October 1940 Fascist Italy demanded the surrender of Greece, but the Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas famously responded with "OXI"(=No).Greece in the following Greco-Italian War repelled Italians back into Albania giving the Allies their first victory over Axis forces on land.Eventually the country will fall under the Nazis but they soon faced a serious challenge by the Greek Resistance.

    George Papandreou / Γεώργιος Παπανδρέου
He was born at Kalentzi, in Achaea in southern Greece. As a young man, he became involved in politics as a supporter of the Liberal leader Eleftherios Venizelos, who made him Governor of Lesbos after the Balkan War of 1912. He married a Polish woman, Sofia Mineyko, and their son Andreas Papandreou was born at Chios in 1919.
Papandreou spent the rest of the 1950s in opposition, while the conservatives were in the ascendant. In 1961 Papandreou revived Greek liberalism by founding the Center Union Party, a confederation of old liberal Venizelists and dissatisfied conservatives. After the elections of "violence and fraud" of 1961, Papandreou declared an "uncompromising fight" against the right-wing ERE. His party won the elections of November 1963 and those of 1964, the second with a landslide majority. His progressive policies as premier aroused much opposition in conservative circles, as did the prominent role played by his son Andreas, whose policies were seen as being considerably left of center.

Constantine was born at Psychiko, near Athens, the nephew of King George II and eldest son of the king's brother and heir, Crown Prince Paul. His mother was Crown Princess Frederika, the former Princess Frederika of Hanover. He was one year old when the Germans invaded Greece and he spent the next four years in exile in Egypt and Cape Town with his family. He returning to Greece in 1945. King George died tragically in 1947 and his brother became King Paul, making Constantine heir to the throne. He was educated at a preparatory school and later a boarding school where he was an above average student academically. A fellow student recalled him as, "a good chap, a young man with all the right instincts. He was at his best on the playing fields.". Constantine served in all the three services, attending the requisite military academies. He also attended the NATO Air Force Special Weapons School in Germany. Constantine also attended Athens University where he undertook courses at the Law School.

    CHAPTER 6

    10 November 1964. Paris, France

    “He is here, monsieur.”
“Good. Take me to him. I want to have some discussion.”

Panic was growing inside Paris, as the Soviets neared the city. Most of the French troops were in Belgium and confronted by the Soviets near the border. There were no reinforcements on sight, and the Communist Party had successfully incited trouble within the city. The Fifth Republic, and Charles de Gaulle, seemed to be facing catastrophe.

“It’s a bit difficult to get this man here. He had these armed Russians around him when we spotted him last night.” Tense was also felt inside the National Emergency Command HQ. A high-level agent of DST, French domestic intelligence agency, he was assigned to French Minister of National Defense, Pierre Messmer.
“Over there. Mr. Waldeck Rochet, Secretary General of the French Communist Party.” He pointed toward the sitting man inside the room, who is being guarded by at least four men. Pierre Messmer sat and began the conversation, “You must be the person who is willing to sell France to Russia?”
“I didn’t sell anything. The Soviet Union is coming to liberate this country from the illegitimate Gaullist.”
“Please, don’t say any of these non-sense. How much have you been paid by the Russians?”
    “Not eve...”
“Of course they didn’t just pay you. They financed the communist party and gave arms to the mobs in Bordeaux and this capital city. We know everything about it, Mr. Secretary General.” Pierre Messmer stood and continued the conversation.
“Twenty years ago, I fought to liberate this capital city from the Nazi occupation. Now, the Warsaw Pact army is coming to take this city. I will not forgive invaders, and I will fight to defend this city, and this country. How about you?”
    “We do not fight liberators.”
“I see. It appears that we have different perspective.”
Pierre Messmer’s deputy entered the room. “Monsieur, sorry to intervene. We need you to come over.”
“I have just begun the conversation. But, nevertheless...”

The decision was clear. The police was ordered to quash the uprisings in the city. Women and children were to be evacuated out of the city. At the eastern outskirt of the city, French soldiers, gendarmes, and thousands of Parisians fought defending the capital. The resistance was stronger than the Soviets expected. Despite this, the situation was very desperate for France. Benelux was surrounded, and French eastern cities were now all in Soviet’s hand.

    This...Captain Rafael...15th Wing...reporting.”
    “Who is this? Identify yourself.”
“Monsieur, radar detects large numbers of aircraft coming from the south!” His deputy explained in panic, however Pierre Messmer stood calm, as if he already knew something.
    “I know them.”
General Francisco Franco sent utmost regard to the enemy of Bolsheviks. This is Captain Rafael from the 15th Wing of the Spanish Air Force. Request permission to attack Ivan.”
Bienvenue en France! You have come at least! We have been waiting for you, Spaniards. Your request is granted. Kill as many Russians as you can!”
    Affirmative, sir. Rafael out...

Pierre Messmer walked and notified his deputy, “Now is the time. Assemble the men!”
“How about Waldeck?” asked the DST agent.
“President de Gaulle decided his fate.”
Pierre Messmer then asked, “Where’s my battledress and helmet?”

“We will fight, brave fellow countrymen. We shall not let the invaders take this city. We will fight to the death!”
    “Vive la France!”

    9 November 1964 – 15 November 1964

The battle for Paris was pre-empted with intense propaganda by both sides. Thousands of people were already dead within the first day of the battle. Unexpected by the Warsaw Pact, large numbers of Portuguese and Spanish aircraft emerged from the south, engaging Warsaw Pact aircraft and bombing the ground forces. While on the beach near Caen and Le Havre, nearly ten thousands Portuguese and Spanish marines landed. A Spanish division also arrived near Saint-Nazaire. In addition, Canadian force also disembarked at Brest. All rushed toward the capital. Halfway between Lyon and Dijon, French forces fought a bitter defensive battle against Czechoslovak forces, but not for long. Regiments of joint Portuguese-Spanish paratroopers were deployed amidst the battle, and suddenly the Czechoslovaks found themselves outnumbered. The Czechoslovaks were forced to fall back toward Dijon, and French, with the assistance of Portuguese and Spanish paratroopers, were now in the offensive. East of Paris, the Soviet and Czechoslovak forces suffered heavy losses due to strong French resistance and sudden Portuguese and Spanish bombardments. However, they continued to advance and the defenders slowly retreated back toward the center of the city. South of Paris, another French army unit engaged a Czechoslovak division from Dijon, and later with the assistance of the Spanish, the Czechoslovaks were routed.

The first wave of reinforcements to arrive near Paris was the Portuguese and Spanish marines who counter-attacked the Soviets from the north, along with elements of Canadian Air Force from the west. The second wave, surprisingly, was the French forces from Belgium who managed to evade Soviet troops near the French-Belgian border. They soon broke through the Warsaw Pact columns from the north and effectively cut them. Finally, with the arrival of French, Spanish, and Canadian ground forces from the south, the Warsaw Pact forces near the city were swiftly trapped and isolated. Attempt to relieve them proved futile. By 15 November, nearly 40,000 Soviet and Czechoslovak troops were encircled east of Paris, and the city of Dijon has been retaken by French soldiers and their allies. The news of Spanish entrance into the war, Warsaw Pact setback, coupled with increased number of gendarmes and pro-Gaul military reservists, armed with fighting vehicles, have resulted dramatic reversal of the situation in Aquitaine region. Hundreds of pro-communist rioters were reportedly killed.

In Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, NATO came under attack almost from all fronts. The Soviet constantly attempted to persuade its enemy, with leaflets and radio broadcast urging the civilian to overthrow the capitalist government and NATO soldiers to surrender, with promise of good care and honor. However, NATO stood firm and responded with its own broadcast about freedom and democracy. The Soviet began the offensive toward Benelux with massive aerial assault by more than 700 aircraft, and supported by around 100 Czechoslovak fighter-bombers. NATO, however, were well prepared. Hail of anti-aircraft bullets and missiles were unleashed upon the incoming Warsaw Pact aircraft, and the combined NATO air force and naval aviation hindered Warsaw Pact aerial offensive greatly, resulting the destruction of over 100 Soviet aircraft on the first day of the offensive alone. On the ground, the Soviet Union sent more than 50,000 of its soldiers from Germany and attempted to strike NATO troops west of Wesel, where they faced strong resistance and fortifications and only managed to advance no more than 10 kilometres. Further south in Luxembourg, NATO launched counter-offensive operation to the south and southeast, but were quickly overrun by the Soviet and Czechoslovak troops and forced the remaining NATO units to retreat back into Luxembourg. At northern Netherlands, Soviet troops were caught off-guard by landing operation of British Army and Royal Marines. The British counter-offensive swept the area successfully from Warsaw Pact’s occupation. With Polish soldiers refused to go and battle the British, Soviet reinforcements from Germany were unable to stop British counter-offensive. Tense was also fueled with numerous incidents of Polish pilots refusing to fight or in many cases, engaging their own Soviet counterpart and caused great confusion among the Soviet pilots. These incidents were fully exploited by NATO forces, causing even more aircraft loss for the Soviet Union. Although by 15 November, Warsaw Pact troops have advanced several kilometres into Netherlands and Belgium and occupied Luxembourg, they lost more than 40,000 men and over 400 Soviet and 60 Czechoslovak aircraft were downed.

Poland. Following the mass execution of Polish and East German mutineers last week, tension grew. In Gdańsk, Gomułka arrived and attempted to appease the discontents by promising to cut government wages and distribute them to the workers and peasants. However, he failed to address the most important issue about the killing of hundreds of Polish mutineers. The Poles were dissatisfied with the treatment of their soldiers, and as a result, the discontent grew into uprising and spread to nearly all major cities in Poland. In Warsaw, thousands of protestors stormed the communist party headquarter and Soviet embassy building, the Soviet ambassador was dragged and lynched. Many member of the armed forces also participated, and the pro-government forces were overwhelmed. Some high-ranking Polish officers then proclaimed the end of “illegitimate communist government” and urged all Poles to fight against the Soviet oppressors and help the western states under the newly-formed “Polish Liberation Army”. Almost everywhere, the communist officials were spontaneously denounced. At the border of Poland and Soviet Union, many Polish border guards blocked and sabotaged the railway and road access into the country, and the Soviets were unable to transport many of their troops into Germany. Several thousands Soviet troops were trapped inside the country and almost six hundreds Soviet soldiers were killed, mostly by Polish soldiers who joined the Polish Liberation Army. The events in Poland influenced similar uprisings against the Soviet which also occurred in Berlin and Frankfurt. The situation further deteriorated with reports of widespread and rampant looting committed by Soviet soldiers in West Germany, purportedly to be given as “Charity for the People”. Approximately four hundreds Soviet troops were killed as a result, and there were signs of growing discontent among the Germans.

The Norwegian forces, supported by the Americans, also conducted their own military operation. The military operation began with assault by American and Norwegian Air Force against the ships of Soviet Northern Fleet, which effectively destroyed over 20 Soviet warships. As the Soviet fighters engaged Norwegian and more American aircraft, American B-52 bombers came from Norway and diverted some Soviet fighters, however these were later proven to be diversionary move by NATO. Later, large numbers of American B-52 bombers from the north, armed with electronic counter-measure, strike Murmansk, along with Soviet bases and power stations. The American and Norwegian fleet then made their move, and were engaged by dozens of Soviet submarines. With both their naval and air force attention diverted, Norwegian forces performed landing operation near Vardø and Kirkenes. Although not all of approximately 10,000 Norwegian forces reached their destination alive, the move surprised Soviet ground forces and essentially cut Soviet supply line into northern Norway. Norwegian troops arriving at Vardø then proceed into Vadsø and recaptured the city from Soviet’s hand. Soviet ground reinforcements were also prevented by the Norwegians to advance further near Norway-Soviet border.

In Italy, Soviet and Yugoslav forces consolidated their effort, and together with members of Italian Revolutionary Front advanced toward Florence. On the mountain passes, between Bologna and Prato, they were ambushed by Italian anti-communist guerillas and military. The Soviets and Yugoslav brought their aircraft to assist their ground troops, but they were greeted with hail of bullets. After hundreds of members of Italian Revolutionary Front were killed, the rest panicked and fled back toward Bologna. From 35,000 Soviet and Yugoslav troops trapped on the mountain passes, over 17,000 were killed, another 11,000 were captured, while the rest managed to retreat back into Bologna. At Verona, despite heavy Soviet bombardments, Italian force held the city, while at Genoa and Milan the chaos continued despite Warsaw Pact military setback, mainly fueled by propaganda broadcasted by Yugoslav forces.

War in the Balkans took a new turn for NATO, with series of offensive toward Bulgaria from Greece and Turkey. The combined Greek-Italian forces launched assault, dubbed “Operation Sparta”, with over 30,000 soldiers into southwestern Bulgaria. Within two days, the city of Sandanski and Gotse Delchev were occupied, with a Greek military contingent headed west from Petrich and stopped several kilometres near Bulgaria-Yugoslavia border. The joint military forces continue to advance north along the Struma River. On air, the largest aerial battle ever occurred in the Balkans began as the Soviets brought over 400 of their aircraft and engaged aircraft of American naval aviation and its NATO allies of equal strength. With fighters of both sides busy destroying each others, Turkish drive into Bulgaria continue. Although at most front, Turkish forces and their Greek ally were stalled along the border, a Turkish division managed to capture the city of Malko Türnovo from Bulgaria. Somewhere else, in Priština, Kosovo, peaceful demonstrations demanding the immediate withdrawal of Yugoslav troops from Kosovo by thousands of people, mainly Albanian nationalists, turned into bloody riots after several demonstrators opened fire on the police. The situation worsened when several unknown NATO aircraft entered Yugoslav airspace and dropped leaflets and fliers to encourage revolt “against the oppressors” in Kosovo and southern Croatia. From the Aegean Sea, NATO fleet finally entered the Black Sea and able to assist ground military operations at Eastern Thrace closer. However, NATO fleet was harassed by the Soviet Black Sea Fleet and Bulgarian Navy.

American B-52 bombers began a new bombing campaign in Caucasus. Concentration of Soviet ground forces north and east of Adzharskaya were destroyed and Turkish ground forces, supported by hundreds of local Islamic guerillas, successfully resisted Soviet paratroopers attempt to recapture Batumi. The B-52 bombers also bombarded the city of Yerevan in Armenia SSR; the city was paralyzed and hundreds of people of ethnic Armenians who previously held rally in the city were reportedly killed. At southwest and southeast Azerbaijan, the local Muslim population revolted against the Soviet government, intensified with the declaration of “War of Azerbaijan Independence” by several prominent members of the newly-formed “Islamic Army of Azerbaijan”, strongly encouraged by the Turkish government. With the lack of troops presence in the area, they seized the opportunity to raid military depots. Turkish Air Force also conducted stealth raid to destroy Soviet oil wells and refineries at Azerbaijan, the raid was a great success with over one dozen oil refineries heavily damaged or destroyed. Although all of the Turkish aircraft were detected and destroyed by anti-aircraft defenses, the last message sent by one of the pilots was reported to be “mission accomplished”.

    NATO States

    United States of America

    1. Renewed NATO counter-offensive, with the assistance of Spanish military, have not only prevented the fall of Paris, but also managed to encircle nearly 40,000 Soviet and Czechoslovak troops east of the city. What to do next?
    2. Norwegian military operation near the Norway-Soviet border, with the assistance of American naval and air force, successfully cut Soviet’s supply line into Norway. In addition, American bombers have succeeded in destroying many Soviet military bases at Murmansk and near Kola Peninsula and at the same time divert Soviet’s attention. What’s the next move?
    3. The situation in Benelux?
    4. American naval aviation aircraft in southeast Balkans (Eastern Thrace) were engaged by large numbers of Soviet aircraft. With both US and the Soviet Union contesting control over sky, the ground operations went with very little air support. What’s your strategy for the situation?
    5. American Second and Sixth Fleet. Where do you want to deploy or redeploy them?
    6. The uprisings in Poland provided ample of opportunity for NATO to give more troubles for the Soviets and kept them from bringing more reinforcements. Do you want to assist the Poles in any way? How?

    France

    1. Renewed NATO counter-offensive, with the assistance of Spanish military, have not only prevented the fall of Paris, but in addition, nearly 40,000 Soviet and Czechoslovak troops were encircled east of the city. Should French attack the encircled Warsaw Pact troops now from all direction or do you have other plan?
    2. With the assistance of combined Portuguese and Spanish paratroopers, French forces have not only routed Czechoslovak forces heading toward Lyon, but also recaptured the city of Dijon from Warsaw Pact’s control. What’s your next plan?
    3. Although several divisions of French force at Benelux managed to reach Paris, there are many other divisions blocked by the Soviet forces just south of Belgium. Should these forces keep attempting to break through the Soviets or should they stay to defend Belgium?
    4. Waldeck Rochet, Secretary General of the French Communist Party, and one of the masterminds behind pro-communist riots in French cities. Should he be executed for treason, exchange him for French prisoners-of-war, or something else?
    5. Although troubles in Aquitaine region and Paris have declined significantly, there is still riot in Toulouse, although in smaller scale, and have prevented Spain to bring more troops from the south to assist France. What’s your plan for the situation?
    6. French Atlantic Fleet and Mediterranean Fleet. Should the fleet stay at the current location? Where do you want to deploy or redeploy them?

    Greece

    1. The combined Greek-Italian military operation in southwest Bulgaria has been relatively successful; the city of Sandanski was captured. However, Bulgarian and Yugoslav counter-offensive is probable, and most of NATO aircraft in the region were engaged by large numbers of Soviet aircraft arrived from the Soviet Union, therefore air support is limited. What to do next?
    2. Many NATO fleet ships moved to Black Sea, should the Hellenic Navy go there too, should they remain at Aegean Sea, or should they move to Adriatic Sea and protect Greek western coastline? Other strategy?
    3. With most road and railway access into and out of Yugoslavia destroyed, another Yugoslav assault is unlikely. However military offensive from Albania is possible, the Albanians have previously raided Greek settlements near the border, although with their current military state, Greek should easily repel any invaders. What is your strategy?

    Turkey

    1. With American naval aviation and NATO air force aircraft in southeast Balkans (Eastern Thrace) engaged by large numbers of Soviet aircraft, air support for ground military operations is very limited. What’s your strategy for the situation?
    2. Turkish and NATO fleet at Black Sea are being harassed constantly by Soviet Black Sea Fleet and Bulgarian Navy. What to do about the situation?
    3. The bombing operations by NATO at Caucasus have destroyed concentration of large Soviet forces near Batumi and prevented further Soviet attempt to recapture the city, at least for the next two weeks. What to do next?
    4. Although all of the aircraft were detected and destroyed. Turkish air raid to destroy Soviet oil wells and refineries at Azerbaijan was a great success with over one dozen oil refineries heavily damaged or destroyed. What’s the next strategy?

    United Kingdom

    1. British counter-offensive in Netherlands has secured much part of the country from the Soviet Union. However, another Soviet offensive in larger scale toward Benelux seems imminent. What is the strategy?
    2. British troops and security forces at Northern Ireland have kept troubles under control for the last two weeks. What’s your next plan?
    3. British Home Fleet. Should the fleet stay at the current location? Where do you want to deploy or redeploy them?

    Warsaw Pact States

    Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

    1. Nearly 40,000 Soviet and Czechoslovak troops are currently encircled east of Paris, and previous attempt to relieve them proved futile. Several French divisions have managed to avoid Soviet forces south of Belgium and reached the French capital. In addition, Spain has entered the conflict in NATO’s side. What to do about the situation?
    2. Despite massive aerial assault aimed toward Benelux, NATO was well-prepared for Warsaw Pact offensive and there were many incidents of Polish pilots engaging Soviet aircraft, as a result the Soviets lost more than 400 aircraft. Luxembourg was captured, but Soviet advance on other fronts stalled. In Netherlands, British counter-offensive has destroyed Soviet forces in the country, and with the Poles refusing to fight the British, Soviet forces were unable to break through the defense. What is the next strategy?
    3. The uprisings in Poland have prevented the Soviet Union to bring large number of reinforcements to Western Europe. Some high-ranking Polish officers even proclaimed the end of communist government and urged all Poles to fight against the Soviets and help western states under the newly-formed “Polish Liberation Army”. The uprisings in Poland have also influenced similar uprisings in smaller scale against Soviet forces in Germany. What to do about the situation in Poland and Germany?
    4. At Barents Sea, Soviet Northern Fleet suffered terrible losses after being attacked by combined American-Norwegian aircraft and navy. Large numbers of American B-52 bombers have also bombarded Murmansk, along with Soviet bases and power stations. These, coupled with other NATO diversionary moves, have enabled the Norwegians to conduct landing operation near Vardø and Kirkenes, recapture both cities from the Soviets, and essentially cut Soviet supply line into northern Norway. What is your strategy?
    5. Soviet and Yugoslav forces were ambushed by Italian anti-communist guerillas and military on the Italian mountain passes. Many were killed or captured. The city of Verona, despite heavy bombardments, also remains under Italian’s control. What is your plan?
    6. The situation in Balkans (Bulgaria and Eastern Thrace)?
    7. American bombers have conducted another large bombing operation, this time directed toward Soviet ground forces at Caucasus and toward the city of Yerevan in Armenia. Batumi remains under control of Turkish forces, supported by hundreds of local Islamic guerillas, who successfully resisted Soviet paratroopers attempt to recapture the city. In addition, Turkish Air Force has conducted raid which succeeded in destroying many Soviet oil wells and refineries in Azerbaijan. What to do about the situation in Caucasus?
    8. The local Muslim population in Azerbaijan have revolted against the Soviet government, and were strongly encouraged by the Turkish government. What is your plan?

    Czechoslovakia

    1. Nearly 40,000 Soviet and Czechoslovak troops are currently encircled east of Paris, and previous attempt to relieve them proved futile. In addition, Spain has entered the conflict in NATO’s side. What to do about the situation?
    2. The city of Dijon was recaptured by French forces, which are supported by Portuguese and Spanish paratroopers. What is your plan?
    3. The uprisings in Poland have the potential to affect the domestic situation in Czechoslovakia. Do you want to give public speech to calm and counter the effect of the uprisings, or is there other plan?

    Poland

    1. The uprisings in Poland mean that unless something very drastic is taken, you will have very little control of Polish military. If nothing is taken, you might eventually be deposed by the people of Poland.

    Yugoslavia

    1. Soviet and Yugoslav forces were ambushed by Italian anti-communist guerillas and military on the Italian mountain passes. Many were killed or captured. The city of Verona, despite heavy bombardments, also remains under Italian’s control. What is your plan?
    2. The combined Greek-Italian military operation in southwest Bulgaria has resulted the fall of some Bulgarian cities, one Greek military contingent even came close to Bulgaria-Yugoslavia border from the east. What is your strategy?
    3. How to handle the riots in Priština, Kosovo, and propaganda leaflets and fliers dropped by NATO?

We of NATO applaud the fighting spirit of all our nation's soldiers. I cannot express the appreciation that I feel for the Spanish, Portuguese, and Canadian soldiers who helped fight and destroy the Soviet Army.

I am also advising not only American troops but the leaders of all NATO countries.
You are to respect Polish troops. If the Poles will paint their flag on their vehicles, the American army will not harm you. If you fire on us, we will fire on you, however. We wish to help free the oppressed Poles and Germans.

Rest assured, these weeks' events did not spell out the defeat of the Warsaw Pact forces. They will be triumphant yet for I promise you, we still have quite a few wily tricks up our sleeves as well.

Do you think the Golden Rule should apply to masochists as well?

92% of teens have moved onto rap. If you are part of the 8% that still listen to real music, copy and paste this into your signature. yes that's right i dont listen rap..

To the French Republic and the wider world:
Paris is saved! Thanks to the bravery of the French people, the air forces of General Franco amongst others, and many many others, France remains a free country. In light of this great event, the government of France, appeals to the people of Aquitaine, and the members of the French Communist Party, to stand down, and once again become loyal citizens of the Republic! Together, we can save France, the Europe and perhaps the world, from despot dictatorships! Onwards citizens, to freedom and justice!

Why did the chicken cross the road?

So that its subjects will view it with admiration, as a chicken which has the daring and courage to boldly cross the road,
but also with fear, for whom among them has the strength to contend with such a paragon of avian virtue? In such a manner is the princely
    chicken's dominion maintained. ~Machiavelli
