The city itself is 88% Black. Kilpatrick has been noted for his attacking white suburban areas to garner the black vote.
That crowd was predominately white, so I doubt that they voted for him in the first place. I'd also bet that many of them were simply Michiganders, not citizens of Detroit at all, based on my understanding of Yankees and Met fans who are not from NYC at New York rallies. I believe he is still supported by the people who re-elected him in 2005 after all of this crap was already going on.
