I was wondering if there is a character transfer facility like ME1-ME2-ME3.
If there isn't I might just wait for the new one, I cant seem to pin it down googling so I thought I would ask the hive mind.

There is a save transfer facility from DAO + DLCs to DA2. However that won't be the reason for which I would ask you to get DAO, because for one DA2 has a different playable character and story...so the transferred saves won't make a big difference aside from maybe a few mentions and cameos.
If you do want to buy DAO do it because of the memorable characters, and the overarching story that runs in the background and will most likely be continued in DA2 and future games.
The horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
Hmm lots to think about this year is shaping up to be too big
ME3
Shogun
Batman

AS said the character transfer isn't in it, but I still think you should play DA1, it is a great game and it will help give you some insight into the lore of the world you will find yourself in, plus some of the characters are returning (albeit in a minor capacity).
Rest in Peace TosaInu, the Org will be your legacy

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
I thought of Dragon Age as being incredibly dull, some adore it but it bored me, took me a few hours to figure out I wasn't having any fun. There is deja-vu in everything you do, if you never played a Bioware rpg before you will love it, if you have you will probably agree.

I found it fun to do once and have almost got into it a couple of times subsequently but I'm always put off by the hugely long quests. Like hours wandering around inside a mage tower or the too long beginning section. Given the length of that single playthrough though, I'm not disapointed with my purchase. DA2 looks like more of the bad bits of DAO to me (less choice, more corny blood and naff fantasy looks), but then i'm put off by silly armour and massive plank-swords.
Allright I'm convinced
I have to hold off on the new one then

I never finished the game... I left off in the dwarf mountain. But I am an old geezer and patience in games are no longer prevalent.
