There were still some bad feelings among the retinue after the long meeting discussing what to do about the usurper king Harald.
There were especially bad feelings in the Sunnmøre camp that just lost one of their own to todays execution. They blamed their neighbours Nordmøre who apparently had not lost any of their own. There were a few fist fights and one Nordmøre man got angry and hurled a rock at a Sunnmøre warrior. The warrior from Sunnmøre ducked and the rock hit a grizzly looking elderly warrior who stood watching. The rock hit just below the eye and apparently caused some pain. Blood flowing down his face the grizzly looking warrior drew his warhammer from its strap on his back. You shall pay for such insolence young pup. The Hovgod standing nearby enquired about the commotion. Seeing the weapon drawn he reminded the grizzly looking warrior about the rules for such things at this meeting. The grizzly man turned to the Hovgod; I ask for official retribution for this insolence. Blood has been drawn and only blood can pay for it. I want Holmgang.
The Hovgod could only agree; So be it.
The grizzly looking man smiled as the young pup from Nørdmøre drew his steel and picked up a shield. It was a particular fine specimen of conquered steel from the south lands. Well tended and apparently in the hands of a skilled man. The grizzly looking warrior attacked first swinging his mighty battle hammer in for a quick end to this fight. The younger man ducked and sliced the thigh of the other man. It was not a serious wound but it infuriated the grizzly warrior. He brought the hammer up as a follow through from the last swing and smashed into the shield arm. The younger warrior buckled from the hard impact on the shield. He felt as if something had broken in his arm. As the grizzly warrior continued to swing the large hammer, the younger man ducked under the swing and slashed in a spin taking the grizzly warrior in the back. A red smear started to appear on the grizzly warriors back. As the man screamed in pain the younger warrior got in another nick of his sword point. This just made the grizzly warrior go berserk. The warhammer flew in wide slashed with incredible force. Each of them would end the younger warrior’s life should they hit home. Even with the bad shield arm the younger warrior evaded the swings and countered with two fine strikes leaving new wounds on the grizzly warriors flesh. The Grizzly warrior changed tactics and kicked the younger man down after a swing of the hammer to his head. The younger man tumbled down and just avoided a crushing blow to the place where he was a fraction of a second before; he swung his blade and caught the grizzly man in his face cutting into the eye socket. The grizzly warrior was beyond feeling pain and just continued swinging the hammer. The young warrior was seriously tired and got his shield up to block another blow. But the hammer came down with such force that it completely disintegrated the shield and hit him in the base of his throat crushing both windpipe and vertebrae. The younger man dropped dead to the ground.
The Nordmøre camp had got their first fallen.
The night was upon the camp and people found their rest in their respective camps.
One such man was
Jarn Carsteinsson.
He could not sleep much a wink due to the happenings of the last day. The chill of the night air did not help. After spending half the night in a futile attempt to get some rest, he gave up & took a walk around the camp. He stopped by a campfire to stretch his tired muscles, his back to the fire. The warmth felt good he thought and so he lingered. There was a pot there with some delicious smelling stew and helped himself to it. The stew made him feel a little weird. He did not notice the flame grow and began to tower behind him. When he finally noticed, his shadow has stretched far in front of him and it was far too late to flee. A huge, massive hand covered his face and upper torso, grabbed him and swiftly dragged him into the raging flames...
Sveyn Gunnarsson of Hordaland was patrolling his king’s ships by the beach when he saw a shadow lurking over by his King’s beached longship. He walked slowly over to the area acting as normal as possible when the sky suddenly grew dark and the wind started to blow violently. The longship's sail caught in the wind and started rocking back and forth. By Odinn, he had to save the ship because it would break on the rocks in the sand should it continue to rock like that. He could already hear the planks groan. He ran for the ship to take down that sail. The wind suddenly focused on the sail and pulled the ship along. Sveyn could not believe his own eyes and turned to flee because the ship was gaining momentum and came right for him. Something caught his foot in the sand and he bellied into the beach. The 80 ton longship crushed Sveyn’s body with its keel as it slid over him, burying his body under it. The wind and the darkness cleared and the summer night was yet again silent. Some might wonder why the longship of Erik of Hordaland was dragged so far up the beach, but it would take days and the ship being dragged back down the beach to discover the crushed body that was under it.
The morning came and people began to stir. A burned body was found in the Romsdal camp and people started crying foul. Today’s meeting would start as the one yesterday with an investigation and a payment to justice. Blood for blood as was the tradition of this people.
