I cannot speak for others, but I don't usually bother to do the whole "away" or "snooze" thing ....., I am online and not responding.

Ah, so how do you do that "away" or "snooze" thing?
I am often not responding and would quite like to be seen as "away" or "busy" so as to not appear rude to my friends if I cannot chat to them.

Click on the option to see who of your friends are online, bottom right of your Steam Community page where it shows your small avatar.
Your list of friends will open verticaly on the right side.
At the top you will see your name.
Click the small v at the right of your name .
You then have the options to select..Online..Away..Busy..Offline.
