It was surprisingly hot that day. The temperature was unbearably high, and the men sweated as they attended their duties around the complex. None of them knew what was in the complex, some thought it might be a secret weapon of some kind, others thought it was safe house filled with goods. Heinrich, even though he was the leader, had no clue. He walked around the base, alone with his thoughts.
They had still not caught the traitor. Or traitors, if there were more than one. He knew time was running out to catch them, as soon they would outnumber the remaining guards. The SS would not help; they had no time for petty guard captains. He would be turned away immediately. Heinrich sighed. He had a tough job.
The end of the day approached. Heinrich sighed, and began to walk back to the complex, signalling the assembly, unaware that it would be the last time that he would do so.
“Gather round and give me your votes.”
The men looked at each other nervously.
“What is the problem? Hand them in!”
One of the guards said quietly, “You sir, are the problem, you are the traitor that must die.”
Heinrich’s open mouth turned to a snarl, as he pulled out his pistol. The men mobbed him and he was pushed to the ground.
The commissar picked up the pistol from the ground. “Fine quality, pity you won’t get to use it. Hold him up.”
The men brought Heinrich up to a standing position. He had a defiant look on his face.
“Traitorous scum, you will pay for this!” he yelled, his final words falling on deaf ears.
The commissar simply smiled and fired the pistol into Heinrich’s torso, until the clip was empty. The men dropped him to the ground. The commissar pocketed the pistol.
“Tomorrow we will come back here to finish this once and for all. Leave the corpse, there will be more to clean tomorrow. You are dismissed.”
The men walked off, leaving Heinrich to sizzle in the hot sun.
That's the writeup for Heinrich, and now I'm doing the one for the last day. (No pun intended).
