    Default 7670M Laptop ?

    Hello,

I got an interesting Acer rig that will mobilize me while doing translation as well as enabling me a gamer on the go.

    It basically has :

    Intel Core i5 2450M
    6 GB DDR3 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 7670M
    17.3'' HD+ monitor (1600*900 res.)
    750 GB HDD

Do you think that video card has what it takes to be a component of a mid-to-high range gaming laptop ?

Also do you see anything bottlenecking ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Minutes after posting this:

If you remember Radeon HD 6670 graphics card, then you should probably stop reading this post at this point. AMD has rebranded HD 6670 to HD 7670, making it the same graphics card, with no changes, beside releasing it only to OEMs. Radeon HD 7670 will be mounted in HP desktops.

    Fork.

How about an HD 6770M or a GT555M then ? Which one would you go for ?

First thing would be the screen. 17+ inch at 1600x900 ? Down with that sort of nonsense.

What resolutions must a monitor of such size be able to show at least?

Try getting a 1920x1080 (or even better: 1920x1200) if you can. Thing is that 1600x900 seems reasonable in the same way that 1366x768 seems reasonable on a 15.6inch screen. Then you get it, and you can literally see the little horizontal lines. Ugh. Your eyes will adapt to it, no doubt, but what you can never shake off is the feeling you could do with some more vertical real estate.

    So 1600x900 on 17.3'' is what 1366x768 is to 15.6'', right ?

Yes. Consider that before everything and their mother suddenly went 16x9, a good 15.6 inch screen would sport resolutions of 1440x900, and lesser ones 1280x800.

Keep in mind that top of the line mobile graphics is only equivalent to the 'midrange' version of the highest desktop GPUs. Everything from there goes down. 7670M isn't very strong.

How about GT555M and HD 6770M ? (I looked up those on notebookcheck.net, I'm asking about your opinions)

For example, I've personally experienced that because of Nvidia Optimus technology, sometimes the laptop fails to switch to NVidia GPU from the onboard in demanding applications which get you a great headache. Did such problem get solved in newer video cards or is ATI simply problem-free at that ?

480 shaders is pretty good, and will drive pretty much any game at 1600x900:

might want more tho if you intend to game at 1920x1080..........
