I think this is an important feature regarding Taksashila's gameplay and it's not meant to be a "secret thing" (if it was... sorry Mithridates...). The scripting behind the Mauryan Emperor as suzerain of the Raja of Taksashila is meant to reduce the capability of the player to blitzkrieg out of the initial area for a reasonable amount of time. The tribute is very heavy and the conquered settlements can only build the minimum levels. So, it's going to be interesting to see only the very patient players putting forth a strategy to enable them to balance the finances and building a large army before the gates of Maurya open up against him.
The advantages of the protectorate are very high indeed and the player may use them wisely: if some faction declares war on Taksashila, the emperor will send a small contigent of troops (led by a captain, of course) to help the Raja.
Indeed! The generals gain points based in their exploits on the battlefield (great battle victories, conquered settlements, etc) and those ChieftainPoints will allow them to gain ranks as war leaders, and ultimately become the chieftain of their tribe (this ethnicity is defined when the character shows up in the game). The player will decide if he wants to actively "help" a certain general to become chieftain or to act dispassionately and simply allow luck and skill to decide the next chieftain of each tribe.
