Default Sid be merciful -- I've purchased Civilization IV

So, I have a confession to make:

For all that I'm a fan of 4x titles, I have never played -- much less owned -- any of the Civilization games. Not once. Not ever.

I don't know why this is. The series is, in many ways, the "gold standard" of the genre (as much as -- if not more than -- the first two Master of Orion games), so I really ought to have played at least a couple of Civ games by this point. Yet I haven't. (Maybe I was worried about over-hype? I don't know.)

However, that's about to change: A few days ago, I found a copy -- an actual physical copy! -- of Civilization IV: The Complete Edition in Target for just $20.00. At that price, I couldn't resist, especially as I'd already been contemplating the lack of Civ in my life.

When I get off work tomorrow morning, first thing I'm doing is going through the tutorials, and then diving into my first full campaign after that. Can't wait!

While I really ought to have known better, little did I realize how true those words would prove.

Between last night and the night before, I've spent the better part of six hours just playing the tutorial scenario...and I never even realized that that much time had passed! Sheesh.

GAH! Civ III? That's an answer I've never heard before. I've always considered it my least favorite of the entire series, with Civ 4 top and SMAC second. What exactly is it about Civ III that you love so much?

While I wouldn't say III was the best, there's a certain enjoyment to doing this to poor, underdeveloped countries:

Airpower, while not exactly balanced, was ridiculous amounts of fun. Helped make up for the less enjoyable, zerg-rush settler and army spam you had to do early on to keep up.
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then, the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

Oh, don't forget the mod community! There's some excellent mods out there.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

Infinite City Sprawl was one of the things that really annoyed me about Civ 3. It made the late game a massive chore and I was very pleased that they cut back on it in Civ 4. I'll admit that it was even more of a problem in SMAC, particularly after ocean city tech arrived, but the rest of SMAC's features made up for it in a way that Civ 3 never managed.
