    Default Employed and happy

Just started my second week of work. :) Feels nice to have a job again! lol I've been having to be popping two Aleve before work and two after in order to take the standing on my ankle, but I can still do it.
Now it is only working at a fast food place, so it is hardly fantastic, but it is something, which is more than I have been able to say for a while. I think I just had to get rid of the limp. As soon as I learned to walk without it, I got hired. We lost a shift manager, and even though I have only been here a week, my boss is literally so impressed by my work that she wants to train me. Not bad considering that I am still learning the basics and she has people who have been working there for years. It is still a crap job, but not as crappy as it could be. If I can put down that I am currently a shift manager, hopefully that will help me find better work elsewhere.
Yeah, so crap's finally looking up. Hopefully when we have a regime change this Nov, finding a better job will be easier.

lol Frags, I know it is sucky, but it is a start. Once I can write on apps that I am a manager at a store, I will be able to get better work. As the economy improves (keeping fingers crossed that the election goes the way I want it to) I may finally be able to do something with my degree.

I worked at a McDonalds for a little over two months this past summer. It's only a crap job if you let it be a crap job. Have fun with the coworkers when you can, joke around when there is no rush. I doubt your particular location was busier than mine, located at the off/on ramp of the only major freeway in and out of my town.

It's everyonyone's duty to be fired once, my brother did a fine job. Some old lady plus kids wanted something nice and he politelily send her off somewhere else. That is how you get to enjoy being fired, being fired like a boss.

Haha, well, not in this economy. I left because uni started and I didn't think I would have time for 20 hours a week (I don't). Unfortunately, uni will be my full time for a while now so I better do something else to get my resume stand out. That McDonald's job is all I have (everything else is volunteer stuff).

Congrats, Vuk! I too am working a "meh" job, but I'm still happy to have it after over a year of unemployment, so I know that of which you speak.

Glad to hear things are working out for you Vuk. I left that kind of job recently, it's not as bad as people say it is, as long as you have a half-decent manager.

Garbage truck wasfun, what does it matter. The job I most enjoyed was a demolition job, really hard work. Throwing away 5 tiles at a time. I prefer doing that over talking smart really.

I guess it just depends on the location. When I was going through school I worked at another store of the same chain that was attached to a truckstop/convenience store right at the exit of a freeway. We got insanely busy all the time, but a lot of the people were a lot of fun to work with and we had some good times. (despite a manager from hell)
At my store it is easier in some ways because we have a much nicer manager, but most of the people are very boring and don't talk a lot. The one I work at now is also absurdly slow (though many of the employees consider it fast paced) and much larger than the one I used to work at, so it is pretty boring. Most nights we have three consecutive 0 sale hours. That said though, I am a considerably faster and more accurate worker than most here (mostly due to my experience at the other place), so I may soon be a shift manager.

I am not going to be doing this for the rest of my life (hopefully not much longer), but I am at least grateful I got it. I know too many people who cannot find any employment at all.

Working really hard was great fun, everybody took pleasure in doing as much as humanly possible. You are absolutely destroyed at the end of the day but it's pretty fun.

Well I've never had a smart office job so I don't know what it's like, but I imagine I might be the same as yourself, I would prefer something a bit more hands on.

I don't know whether or not you have any qualifications, but I know a couple of people that didn't have any and managed to do not badly for themselves just by working up the chain at these sorts of places. In fact I only know one guy who actually completed University and has managed to get a better-paying job than these people have by the same age.

That's not what I want to do with my life. I want to be self-employed. I am gonna try to climb as high as I can here, but am always looking for a better job. As soon as I can save up the dosh to open my own business, I am going to.

I prefer hard work as well (my first job was clearing forested areas into camp sites at a horse camp), but I can't do that anymore with my ankle. I can barely do fast-food. That's why I want to be self-employed in a business where I can use my hands and not have to constantly be lifting, pulling, or pushing heavy things. lol

I got a few ideas. I really want to start a business with my bro making custom knives, but we gotta wait a bit till we are no longer barely getting by, and our skills will have improved a lot over that time, so it is all for the better. If we just can't make that work (and I think we can), I got other ideas. The great thing about growin up so poor that you need to make your own leather goods, tools, and even some clothing is that you learn a lot of skills. I am just gonna keep trying to make money off of those skills. Most of my family thinks I am crazy, but I'd rather fail at everything I try than try nothing at all. If I am succesful, I will be able to have a lot more pride in what I do than working to make someone else rich.

Good for you. It may be a crappy job, but at least you are not living off of the government as so many Americans are these days. There is dignity in that.

I never worked at a fast-food store but my brother did, he got fired in style. Some old lady with grandchildren asked for something nice and he told her she could better go somewhere else, manager was standing behind him and he was layed of. The same manager who was impressed with his mathematic skills when baking burgers, I don't understand that either but by that time my brother was designing the screws (propellors what's it in english) of the Queen-Mary (yes he's smart I am the pretty one)

    Congrats on the job Vuk.

One of the jobs I used to do in the summer holidays in Perth was pouring lead in a giant tin shed/warehouse. These were for power lines where the ceramic insulators screw on. Lead is soft enough that it doesn't shatter the ceramics. Anyhow by the end of the day doing this my jeans would be black with tar and I would finish up at 4pm walk out into the summer afternoon and put on a jumper as the heat differential was huge going from the foundry to outside.

    Btw Perth in summer is 37 C or 100 F :)

That sounds like a simultaneously interesting and very difficult job. My bro would probably have liked to have worked a summer job like that. He is obsessed with power distribution and just got his degree in Electrical Power Engineering tech.
