Thomas Hitzlsperger comes out of the closet, as the first high-profile player to come out since Justin Fashanu.

With Brian Clough dead and buried, it's looking quite likely that Hitzlsperger will survive. While I'm happy that society has progressed so far as to allow footballers to come out, I'm a little disappointed that he didn't come out until after he retired. While it could be as simple as him not feeling comfortable enough with his homosexuality yet, it could be a sign that the dressing room behaviour hasn't changed since medieval times. Particularly as the FA's recently hired "inclusion-guy" feels homosexuality is gross.

Good for him. Why is it an issue. I'd have no problem sharing a shower with a gay, that he's gay doesn't automatically mean he's attracted to you. FACT, I am probably the only orgah who can claim he shared a bed with a gay Marrocan convict on leave in a trailer.

I'm not sure that's the best metric to judge gay acceptance by. I mean, I think homosexuality is gross (at least the male kind; as for the other ...), and I'm fully in favor of equality and acceptance of gays. Or maybe I'm just a closet homophobe living in denial?

Same. It's just called being hetero. I really don't care if someone is gay but if I see men kissing I am all ewwwww. That is my problem though and I am not going to make it theirs. They can do what they want, but I am eewwwww, I can't help that despite not having any bad intentions.

He did put it into far more biblical language than that. Words I can't be bothered to remember, thus leading to my simple summary of "gross". It wasn't quite the Allahu-Akbar-chopofftheirheads-stuff, though.

I shared a flat with a gay guy for a year and what I can tell you is, that you get used to it. In the end, it is not more awkward, when the 2 people making out passionately next to you while you are making breakfast, are dudes.

Funny side note, I just realised why this guy just needs a nickname: Even for me as a native German, Hitzlsperger is not that easy to pronounce ;)
