There is always going to be bias when you're being bankrolled by the dynasty that won! Barring some massive finding of papers we are left with Plutarch and Cicero. We get a wild man, drinking and gambling his way nearly to empire. How did he get in that position? Brain? Brawn? Right place? One can't be certain.
There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

Cicero, is quite an interesting point to discuss.
We know he wasnt being bankrolled, unlike Virgil, and he hated tyranny and felt government powers must be limited. The attack on an enemy of freedom (the second philippic against antony) is a good read.
I seem to also remember in Virgils Aeneid the shield of Aeneas shows depicts Rome's glorious future, including the battle of Actium in 31 BC, where Augustus defeated Mark Antony, setting the beginnings of a new hopefully peaceful fuure.

Nasty rumors were stock in trade for Roman elections. No libel or slander laws of substance back then. Attack ads are NOT a new invention.
Didn't this impact also the fact that he was dating Cleopatra? Her being so famous made the rumours even more spicier for the common Roman folk.
Ja mata, TosaInu. You will forever be remembered.

    Proud

    Been to:

Swords Made of Letters - 1938. The war is looming in France - and Alexandre Reythier does not have much time left to protect his country. A novel set before the war.

A Painted Shield of Honour - 1313. Templar Knights in France are in grave danger. Can they be saved?
