Thread: Greatest Living Actor

Most actors play a certain character. I would say most of those listed play their character equally well, so it really comes down to whose character you like the best.

I went for daniel day lewis but it could have been any of these... Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Gene Hackman and Cage or Depp

I think daniel took it in the end, because he's british, because i was worried steven segal may be doing better in the pool, of my choices he was top of the list, bar hanks, better recent work, only perhaps challenged by depp for recent work...

The particular problem with Steven Segal is that action heroes should run like a girl, observe.

Edward Norton, he was amazing in both Fight Club and American History X.

I ended up going for Anthony Hopkins. I mean, just compare "A Bridge Too Far" to "Mutiny on the Bounty" to "Silence of the Lambs." Not bad, if you ask me.

As for Daniel Day-Lewis, I've only seen one of his movies, and frankly he hasn't acted nearly enough to be considered "legendary." That's why I still consider Michael Caine to be the closest thing to a living legend: he's acted in over a hundred movies in probably a greater variety of roles (and has done better) than any other actor alive.

Hard choice, but I picked Norton because he's still young and will end up legendary.

    Haha, Segal.

On that list Lewis, but my favourite on that list would be Denzel Washington. I absolutely loved Man on Fire.

I must admit you make a strong case Lemur, but my vote would go to either Derek Jacobi or Jim Broadbent.

Went for Edward Norton. Actually, I don't think he's "greater" than a dozen other actors-- it's not really possible to compare greatness imo. But having just re-watched Fight Club last week, I am teetering dangerously close to Norton-worship.

Agreed, and that's why I think Daniel Day-Lewis stands out. He does not have a single role or character that defines him. His roles run the gamut of acting, and he excels in all of them. Anyone who can pull off My Left Foot, The Last of the Mohicans, In the Name of the Father, and There Will Be Blood has proven that he has range beyond what most actors are capable of.

But since neither man is present, why not cast your protest vote for ... oh, I don't know ... Steven Segal?

I do like Segal. However I cast my vote for Nicholson. Two of my favorite movies, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "The Shining" really show off his multi-role talents.

    Denzel Washington FTW.
