    A interesting thread

    well my only comment

We do know we can fight during rain, snow and at night however, going by screenshots
I am hoping for lots of night ship battles. Just something about complete darkness lit up by cannon fire is rather cool I think.

Hopefully my admirals can get some kind of sea night fighting bonus, like in rome..only at sea haha :).

Maybe they can get useful items to help them in night battles, like a compass that glows in the dark

Are you an Admiral who hates the sun? Do you prefer to fight under the cool night sky, gazing at the stars? If so then this product is for you. Straight from the Royal Navy Quartermasters Storeroom comes the new Glo-compass. It glows in the dark so you know were you are going even at night!

By one alone or by it as a set with the Glo-sextant and Glo-ship's wheel. Order one within the next two weeks to recieve a free toy cutlass!

The free toy cutlass should clearly give your admiral a morale boost.

I'm sure someone at CA has far to much time and way to many books can come up with a glow in the dark substance of 1700-1800, even if it's just a firefly caught inside my compass

Night battles are fun, hopefully with stars my commanders will go the right direction...aka:not run away

    Some things we have heard:

Naval Battle Maps are larger than the land ones.

Ships cannon must be manually reloaded (at least in some demo settings)

At least some ships have bow and stern chasers.

    Some Questions:

Will ships’ guns have longer ranges?

Will guns be reloadable individually or only as a broadside? (this would allow for a mix of shot to be fired and a few other tactics to be used)

Will musket men man the riggings?

ETW is not solely a RTS so I am sure cutting out won’t be an option and we know landing parties were not in the game, at least prior to the release delay. It isn’t like it is strictly a tactical naval battle game so it need not play like a Hornblower or one of the other novels.

No they are reloaded as well as fired automatically. The player has the option to hold fire as well as manually reload guns when he wants to change the ammo.

This might be interesting for the age of sail fans:

Admiral Robert Calder was court-martialed for not a big enough win against a larger foe.

    There may be others…

It was much more political than military/naval when those actions were taken.
More recently the U S Navy tried to do the same thing to Commander Lloyd Bucher of the USS Pueblo. The admiralty was simply trying to cover themselves for sending him to N Korea with no support and only a .50 caliber machine gun as armament. The man had only two choices: Resist and be sunk or surrender. Fortunately Nixon intervened and nixed the court martial.

This attitude from the Brits explains the popularity of Beatty in WWI. The details were not as great as the legend but he has the swashbuckling image they loved.
