Thread: For those who have the special edition. Is it worth it?

Default For those who have the special edition. Is it worth it?

Does anyone have the special edition and has played a campaign with it?
How do the extra units fit into the game?
Do they destroy the balance or are they a welcome diversion?

Since my game.co.uk was overdue, I ordered the special editon from amazon and I am trying to find out if I should keep it or resell it.

p.s. I know you can edit the extra units into the normal game.

I have only gotten to the HMS Victory, all my other games haven't lasted long enough to get it. So, until then I would say no. Although the single disc from the History Channels "The Revolution" was a little disappointing considering its a two disc set if I remember correctly. ~sigh~

You do not edit them in exactly - they just are.

Playing as the French I upgraded my barracks in Paris to the second level and was able to recruit Buckeley's Irish regiment. You pay a bit extra than you do for a normal line regiment but hey, their stats are better a and they have the older looking XVIIIth century uniform; grey coat with no turnback, wide green cuffs and lapels.

They are off fighting the Savoyards and I am sure they will put a hurten on them.

As yet there isn't really much balance in the game regarding units, so nothing could fluff it up anymore than what we already have. When you see the native American lancers, a man wearing nothing but a loincloth, riding an unarmoured horse and carrying a short stabbing spear, with 60 horses in the unit, charge a unit of 160 Hessians with fully upgraded bayonet and new model bayonet drill and shatter the unit in a matter of seconds, you'll see what i mean.

As for the Special forces edition being worth it... sure. I like the map and the box the game comes in. The box can be unfolded and used as room decoration. I have a shelf for these kind of games, it looks nice. I have ETW on there, Oblivion, WoW and its first expansion, SPORE, even though it sucked.

Totally not worth it for the extra unit, but definitely worth it for the box and map.

I've only messed about with 2 of the special units..

Roger's Rangers were cool. You can only recruit one unit of them, that's the max. But I had them along with two other normal ranger units fighting against the Huron in my GB campaign. Statistically, they really aren't that much better than normal rangers. But still cool.

The Organ Gun, on the other hand, is the thing dreams are made of. I love it. Only problem is the reload time, I can usually only get one to two volleys off, but I've killed over hundred troops in one volley before (with five Organ gun units), including entire units... Each Organ gun fires 11 balls at a time. In each of my first two battles with them, I wiped out the opposing general's unit on the opening volley. I wasn't aiming for him (was alt-rightclicking ahead of their main line), just after the carnage I saw the little icon float down the left and then noticed there were lots of horsies taking a mid-battle nap...

Worth it? Yea. Unbalancing, not really. The 4 infantry units are mostly a already existing unit with a few more morale. In addition most of them you can only have 1 unit of them. Haven't built Victory yet. As someone else pointed out, the Organ gun is fairly impressive.

Depends how much it is compared to the normal version. My special version was only 3 quid more than the standard version, so I went for it.

I don't have it yet, but I doubt it's really worth much, I assume people buy the more expensive version to support CA as much as to get the extras.

I have used the Roger's Rangers. While they dont appear to have that much of a stat boost over normal rangers, they seem to do much better kill/death wise in battle. Like a previous poster I would use the Roger's Ranger unit with a couple regular Ranger units to deal with small behind the lines fighting and Roger's Rangers always finish the battle with more kills and less deaths so the little stat boost seems to play out well in battle. I have not had the chance to use the other special units. I can see where this isnt worth it to other people, but to me it is. I love the TW series so much, that another 10 bucks or so is worth having more units in the game, even if there are only a few additions. For instance, if I didnt have the Roger's Rangers I would probably be using line infantry or dragoons to do small behind the lines fighting, but using Roger's Rangers instead with other ranger units seems more fun to me (makes role playing much better). Also I like the map that comes with the special addition. My wife jokes me because I will look over the map and mentally plan out how I want to attack/defend. It makes me feel like a general and to my wife it also makes me look like a nerd, lol.

it is by far not worth it. I have only used a few of then but the HMS Victory is worse then the heavey first rate by far. So save your money.

I liked the campaign map the best - the extra units are not a big deal really but I bought my copy from JB Hi FI in Sydney they were selling the normal version for $79 as opposed to $109 in other stores and the Special forces edition for $89 - so $10 bucks difference. Somehow they made it available one day early so when I went to the counter to pay the guy said that'll be $79 so I got it at the normal prices afterall.

Did anyone buy the version that came with the compassm, hip flask and chest?
If so does having a little swig of brandy while you play put you in the mood and inprove your gameplay?

Glad I am not the only one who found that disappointing. The box did saw "Revolution," not "Revolution, Vol. I."

Also makes you wonder what they did with all the Vol II, III, IV, and V DVDs.
