Bugger, I can't get better then about 950. I'll have another go when I get home but I think I'm out.

it was tricky , i probably made just a few small errors in the battle ... which was difficult enough ..
one thing i changed from all other battles was my starting strategy

hrmpf, a senseless doublepost to post my result, please excuse it.
A bit unfair...

Medario, you have ruined my perfect moment. I came here so excited because I won with 1019 men remaining, I had exceeded my best and I was certain I could not be beaten.
For what it's worth, here is my perfect moment.

Just out of curiosity and out of an attempt to retain some sense of achievement, I know it has no bearing on the competition, but how many healed casualties did you have?

I don't have a statistic screen, but i know that six men were healed. I would have been better...if i didn't lose peltasts and akontistai for nothing.
ah man , this is going to get down to 0 losses or something (i'm sure it can be done) ... lets get a more balanced battle next round :P
If anyone can beat my entire conversion of the enemy army I will be impressed
BTW, I think this is one of the best ideas for this forum I've seen. I don't think a balloon does you justice for your work and ideas, Molinaargh. Very well done.

This should be kept going, a nice battle every week is some nice relaxation. Something similiar should be done for each faction.
For the unit in next battle... What about Mak peltasts? The agrianians were as good as always in this battle!
Please accept my humble balloon:

I guess unit size is huge? Is this alx compatible?
Anyhow, its a great idea. It shows how much EB has become a game on its own!

True, but what for? (other than comic value, as seen above)
The next battle will indeed be a lot harder, with heavier casualties for the player. It was hard for me to balance the battle without knowing what the players could achieve, and I will try to learn from this experience and next ones and make the next battles always better.
Thanks! I do intend to continue making battles after this competition. I aimed low (only 4 battles) because when the project is too ambitious it usually doesn't get finished (although EB is here to prove me wrong!). But that's for later!
Unit size is custom, determined by me. I don't think the number of men change in the battle if you change your options.
EB rocks! I wouldn't do this for any other RTW mod.
The Command Stars rule has been changed as suggested by mountaingoat (thanks a lot!):
The player who reported the best win (less losses) will gain three command stars (), the second player two command stars (
) and the third player one command star (
) in my ranking.
This is a lot fairer, seeing as the results are so close to each other, and should make the competition more interesting. In fact, I have no idea how I didn't think of this before. Again, thanks to mountaingoat.
Now get battling to secure your place among the best 3!
That places me third... for now
I dont know if you got that correctly, I did not mean a makedonian one against all factions, the length is ok as it is. I meant a campaign for every faction. Like a Romani one going to Britain or a Seleucid one going to the Saka Rauka, a koinon one going to Armenia etc etc etc..

Question; how many attempts does the participants get? Seems to me they keep on interminably and that someone only noticing the thread tomorrow and having time for only one battle will have less chance of winning then someone who tried ten times...
Note that I do not play 1.2 :-(, but on principle of fairness.

I did get you, it's a fine idea
You're right, but it's impossible to limit the number of times someone can play, and the idea is to have exactly what's going on in this thread: better victories keep being posted because players keep beating and re-beating () each other.
Here's my best result so I don't look too incompetent:

I guess I'll give another go, so I don't look like a loser.![]()
Here's my excuse for losing so many men. I didn't want to kill so many of my Epirote Brethren.

Moli, its a superb idea and I congrat you...
Lets be aware however, that I could give you a screenie where I take NO casualties at all (as you Im sure are aware, I could make each pelast a Super Elephant with a little EDU work)...
My own EDU is so heavily edited, I wont be entering the comp (though I'd love to, but bah, I'm not rediting them back etc.)
I completely believe all the players so far, except, I'd like a least one mid battle scene off all for unequivicable proof...:)
And HEY, you yourself asked for BATTLE Descr, which no-one yet has provided....guys, share your cheesy tactics ...;)
Great Idea btw..best for a long time![]()
I can think of a hundred ways to cheat in this game, but I can't think of any reason to do it. The only good proof would be a replay, but we can't save them for some reason (maybe it's because the battle is too long).
I agree people should post more about how they won the battle, but it seems nobody wants to share their secrets
Thanks and thanks for your thoughts.
... I'm half tempted to go and photoshop a -1 casualty report ...
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.
"Hi, Billy Mays Here!" 1958-2009
In the first section of the battle the enemy skirmishers always ride out to attack to I take my pelatasts off skirmisher mode and put my akontistai behind them and let them have a skirmish with the horses. They take very few casualties but usually kill at least half the horses.
I then move my troops up and order my phalanx to line up next to the first levy phalanx. I then get my assault infantry to march through that gap at which point the enemy assault infantry and their horses attack, and I launch an attack against them with all my horses and assault infantry, resulting in a rout and a dead general. I then get my assault infantry to go behind the lines of the levy phalanx and slaughter them.
My horses will then have enough room to make charges against the rears of the elite enemy phalanx. If I line all my troops in front of a single unit of elite phalanx then their morale will be low enough that a single huge charge from all 4 of my horse units will break them instantly. At which point they won't run because my infantry are in front of them so my assault infantry mercilessly slaughter the dissarayed, "fighting to the death" phalanx units.

i do something similar , but i use the assault infantry to lead a charge to the side then cav in the rear flanks .
i pulled off a different starting tactic which i may attempt again ... if you pull back at the start , you can capture most of the skirmisher cav with your own cav , and even the general will charge out ... this gives you a clear path when having to clear the phalanx , but you still have to be very precise when attacking due to how tight the comp is ... pretty much every phalanx you route needs to be done with 0 losses.
just finished another battle , would be for 3rd place , though ill have another go or two at it as lost many units due to error.
I hope you took a screenshot, what if you can't do as well again?
This is the current ranking for Battle I:
Code:Medario 1021 miotas 1019 Flavius Camillus 998 mountaingoat 972 Molinaargh 970 Titus Magnus 954 miotas 923 mountaingoat 870 Titus Magnus 859 Molinaargh 656 Ghaust the Moor 643
Good Battle, only good enough for third, i'm ready for the next one

This was my first attempt at 3 a.m. after a party ;)
I dont know what was wrong with my AI 8maybe an ALX problem?) but the phalanxes where just sitting around.
Why is their so few phalanx for Makedonia?
Anyway, I'm eager to play the next part.

I see rankings are made on basis of men remaining. However, shouldn't that number be adjusted in order to incorporate the amount of enemies remaining? For each enemy remaining, you substract one of your number? That sounds a bit more fair, if you ask me!
Just my 2 cents! Great idea this, following with great interest. And no, not participating myself right now. I'm getting married next week, so I've got some other stuff to worry about. ;)
