The database got corrupted at some point, so Sim restored from the most recent backup, meaning some 6 hours of activity were lost. Backups have now been set to run every 6 hours rather than every 24, so as to further minimise data loss.

The length of downtime was due to its timing, as Sim is away for the Sabbath, sunset Friday EST to sunset Saturday. Let's hope there aren't any downtimes coinciding with Passover.

Little comfort to me, as I got my two rep points and 20 posts lost. Now I have just 22 posts and no rep. And those posts were mostly quite long and informative, with screenshots as well. Another words, heck of a lot of time wasted.

This setback pretty much ended my TWC history. I have no desire to come back.

In case anyone was wondering, Simetrical was adding a binary logger, thus taking down the site for a few minutes. AFAIK, this would work as a kind of interim backup, meaning far less data would be lost in event of another data-corrupting crash (which aren't that frequent anyway, this last one being the first to happen since July 2007). In his own words,

I'll set up my machine to pull the binlogs every hour, so in theory even if the data center gets hit by a meteor and the TWC server becomes a puddle of molten metal, we'd still lose at most an hour's data. I'll still only pull the full dump every week.

I'm guessing that contingency plans still have to be made to locate the physical backups outside the blastzone, so that data loss can be minimised in the event of an asteroid strike.

Maybe they are in maintenance?

No worries dude. I guess its only a usual downtime. It was down yestarday too at the same time. Probably will be back on soon.
