The following seeems to have fixed the CTD problem for me:

It points to a tiny (1K!) download at:

http://rapidshare.com/files/11521154...D_Fix.zip.html

which contains two small images, button_ipprev.bif and button_ipnext.BIF

Unzip them into

c:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Medieval - Total War - Gold Edition\campmap\buttons

having first backed-up your originals.
